Japanese III will be taught through a distance learning course "Irasshai" from Georgia Public Broadcasting.  This award winning class utilizes videos and audio conferences with a native speaker.

Course Objectives

This course guides learners through beginning Japanese I. It provides opportunities for students to understand, speak, read, and write Japanese.

Curriculum*

An advisory board of renowned experts in Japanese language and culture and second language acquisition designed the curriculum.

It contains four key components:

• Video Lessons

• Audio Interaction – twice weekly telephone conversation practice with native speakers

• Textbook and activity materials

• Activities and information available through the Irasshai website: www.gpb.org/education/irasshai

Assessment of Learning*

The Irasshai Program for high school credit utilizes a multifaceted assessment strategy to accurately measure achievement of the specific learning objectives. The components and methods for calculating the course grade are listed below:

• Speaking and listen progress (through the audio interaction) 40%

• Tests and quizzes 25%

• Assignments (written materials, homework, practice tests) 15%

• Participation 10%

• Final Exam 10%

Grading:

Projects/assignments are to be completed by the due date. Please confer with the teacher before the due date if you feel that you or your group will not be able to make the deadline. Late work will not be accepted (with the exception of make-up work due to excused absences). Make up work is the responsibility of the student.

Progress reports are issued to all students each 3 weeks.

Irasshai will issue credit at the end of the semester.

Expectations:

The course facilitator is responsible to:

• Provide a class environment that is safe and conducive to learning

• Be an enthusiastic, encouraging teacher/facilitator

• Be fair, firm, and consistent

• Support students’ interests and projects

• Maintain communication with students, parents, and staff to the benefit of student success

• Distribute course materials

• Copy and mail student work to be graded by the Irasshai office

• Return graded work to the student

• Keep all class records of attendance and grades

As a student it is your responsibility to:

• Attend class and be on time

• Be prepared for class: complete lessons, prepare for audio, quizzes and

• Diligently apply yourself to complete projects and assignments

• Courteously listen to students, audio teacher, guests and facilitators.

• Take responsibility for the classroom leaving it clean and ordered

• Focus on learning and allow others to focus on learning

• Stretch yourself, take risks, and be creative

I am looking forward to spending a productive year exploring the language and culture of Japan. This new course requires commitment and dedication of both the teacher and the student.
