As a comprehensive magnet high school, the International School of the Americas is one of six high schools in the North East Independent School District. The approximate enrollment is 450 students with an ethnic composition that mirrors the city of San Antonio. Over 50% of the students are from ethnic backgrounds other than Anglo with the majority of this group being Hispanic. Approximately 95% of the students are predicted to attend either a four-year or two year post-secondary institution.

Students are required to complete 120 hours of community service before graduation. The opportunities for community service vary from student to student. It is a commitment of the International School of the Americas to strengthen the partnership between the school and the community through community involvement and voluntarism. Student involvement is important to further the goals of citizenship, community relations, understanding, and real-world experiences for students.

Students are to arrange for their own community service hours. Students should obtain a form from the school office to be used to document community service hours. Students should bring the signed form back to the school office for documentation of community service hours. Examples of community service could include volunteering at church, helping at school, volunteering at nursing homes, community events, food banks, elementary schools, libraries, etc.
