MUNSA XVI's twelve committees focus on dozens of areas—from
intellectual property (WIPO) to conflict
(Security Council) to health (WHO)—and range in size
from fifteen to one hundred fifteen delegates. Each committee
will have two assigned topics for debate and will report to two
or three committee Chairs.

The Security Council
Chaired by Maya Russo and Scott Brogan: The Security Council is a principal organ of the UN that was established in order to create peacekeeping organizations, to sanction regimes, and to authorize military action in order to maintain international collective security. The Security Council has the power to investigate any situation threatening international peace; to recommend procedures for peaceful resolution of a dispute; to order Member States to completely or partially interrupt economic relations as well as sea, air, postal, and radio communications; to order Member States to sever diplomatic relations; and to enforce its decisions militarily or by any other means it deems necessary. Topics for the Security Council are
- Determining the future prospects of foreign detainees while respecting national sovereignty, and
- Mediating the Kashmir Conflict to Create a Lasting Peace
The Economic and Social Council
Chaired by Matt Stahl and Dylan Reid: The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is a primary organ of the General Assembly whose goal is to promote international economic and social cooperation and development. The Council's activities include information-gathering, making policy recommendations, and advising Member States. ECOSOC also assesses the progress of Member States towards the Millennium Development Goals as well as towards goals stated at major international conferences during the past fifteen years. Topics for the Economic and Social Council are
- Limiting the Impact Industrial and Economic Growth Has on the Environment in Newly Industrialized Countries, and
- Discussing Overpopulation and Ethical Methods of Population Control
The General Assembly
Chaired by Fatima Jaffer, Julie Choi, and Joanna Boland: The United Nations General Assembly serves as the world's premier international forum. It is a stage where delegates from all 192 United Nations member-states gather to discuss pressing global issues that transcend the jurisdictions of lesser UN organs. It was the first UN organ to be created, and it is arguably the most powerful.

- Discussing an Efficient Way of Stabilizing Inflation within International Trade
Disarmament
Chaired by Marco Juarez, Brandon Mikneus, and Alexa Zanikos: The goal of Disarmament is to promote nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, especially as regards regimes holding weapons of mass destruction—chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons of war. Disarmament also coordinates efforts involving conventional weapons (e.g., land mines, small arms) that may be weapons of choice in violent conflicts. The committee fosters international dialogue, transparency, regional disarmament efforts, and other various methods of reducing the number of arms in circulation. Topics for Disarmament are
- Considering Measures to Regulate the Implementation of Biological and Chemical Weapons, and
- Discussing the Control of Ammunition Stockpiling
The Human Rights Council
Chaired by Renee Salem and Miguel Guevara: The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a council established by the General Assembly to strengthen and promote fundamental human rights and to deal justice to human rights offenders. The Council emphasizes human rights and encourages all Member States to respect human rights as outlined in the UN Charter. UNHRC works with NGOs at both the regional and international level to promote and protect human rights. Topics for the Human Rights Council are are
- The Protection and Provision of Political Rights in the Middle East and North Africa, and
- Providing Protection to Homosexuals in Developing Nations
The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee
Chaired by Ana Lopez and Joy Roberston: The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SHC) is a body of the General Assembly that deals with protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms as outlined in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. It also collaborates with other organizations to implement the General Assembly's resolutions. Topics for the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee are
- Addressing Increased Orphan Populations in Developing Nations, and
- Addressing the Role of Privatization Regarding the Growing Demand for Water in Developing Nations
The United Nations Development Fund for Women
Chaired by Madison Moore and Elizabeth Farrell: The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies to foster women's empowerment and gender equality. The committee places women's human rights as the center focus of all its efforts, which include fights against poverty, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and intergovernmental gender inequality. Topics for the United Nations Development Fund for Women are
- Assessing the impact of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the female population, considering the societal consequences of this infection, and
- Encouraging the improvement of health care in order to reduce child mortality rates in developing nations
The United Nations Environment Programme
Chaired by John Roussin and Rachel Richter: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coordinates environmental policy by reviewing the global environment and by encouraging individual governments and the international community to take action on environmental issues. Its activities cover issues ranging from atmospheric pollution to marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Topics for the United Nations Environmental Programme are
- Identifying and analyzing the effects of overpopulation on ecosystems around the world, and
- Refining ways to utilize hard infrastructure to create a more environmentally conscious and sustainable global community

In addition to the UN organs described above, MUNSA XVI also hosts four committees whose members work in partnership under UN auspices but are not official UN organs.
The International Labour Organization
Chaired by Christopher Garza, Amy Maydon, and Moriah Sonsino: The International Labour Organization (ILO) works to promote employment in free, equitable, secure, and dignified environments by encouraging job creation, workers' rights, and social protection. Topics for the International Labour Organization are
- Generating potential solutions to combat labor exploitation of illegal persons, and
- Analyzing ethnicity-based discrimination against workers
The World Health Organization
Chaired by Isabella Olea and Rebecca Ramirez: The World Health Organization (WHO) works to ensure that all people attain the highest possible level of health. It does so by combating disease and promoting the general health of the world's people through international programs designed to treat and prevent disease and well as support health development. Topics for the World Health Organization are
- Analyzing the Environmental Side Effects of Industrial Development Detrimental to Human Health, and
- Improving and Enforcing Sanitation Standards and Regulations in Areas of Dense Population
The World Intellectual Property Organization
Chaired by Bianca Lopez and Taylor Ledford: The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency established by the WIPO Convention of 1967 in order to provide a fair intellectual property (or IP) system. The organization works in order to address intellectual property when related to global policy issues to give fair recognition and ownership to the creators of inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names, and images. The topics for the World Intellectual Property Organization are
- Promoting Both Domestic and Cooperative Incentives to Prevent the Out-Migration of Intellectual and Technical Personnel from Less Developed Nations to More Developed Nations, and
- A Policy Initiative on the Effects of Intellectual Property Rights on Genetically Modified Crops in Less Developed Countries
Organization of American States
Chaired by Nellie Spener and César Martinez: The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the nations of the Western Hemisphere to strengthen cooperation on democratic values, defend common interests, and debate the major issues facing the region and the world. The OAS is the regions principle multilateral forum for strengthening democracy, promoting human rights, and confronting shared problems such as poverty, terrorism, illegal drugs, and corruption.
