MUNSA XVII
The world has always been at odds over the issue of development. Since the
conclusion of the Second World War and the end of institutionalized imperialism,
the world witnesseda watershed of global inclusiveness that has heralded the rapid
industrialization and development of a plethora of nations, former cast aside as the
third world. Under the auspices of appropriate development nations cast asunder have
experienced spirited development at a faster rate than anything accomplished by the
developed world during the Industrial Revolution. The world is converging, and with
it the former barriers of East vs. West, Indigenous vs. Imperialist, Communist vs. Capitalist
has given sway to the backdrop of a globalized planet.
However, as the world surges we continue to negate the strain that our society puts on the Earth in
terms of the consumption of our natural resources, minerals, soil, food, and water. The
immense growth of population coupled with the increasing demand for higher standards of living
among the population stand to create a windfall of ecological, political, and economic
ramifications that cannot be shunned. The concept of Sustainable Development stands as the
vanguard of development that does not infringe on the ability of future generations to develop
themselves. At the heart of this concept lay the crucial issues of water, environment, population,
and economy that together form the pillars of society. In this concept lays the key to the transcendence
of our world to a new era of prosperous longevity.
