Unit Overview

While discovering the “self” concept, students will create input in each class in order to create a Movie Maker presentation.

English

Checkpoint #1 - Students will write a poem with “self” as theme. Checkpoint #2 - Students will then create a PowerPoint file with visual representations for the words and ideas. The Power Point file will be saved on their server and placed into Movie Maker for final project.

Social Studies

Students will demonstrate their “place in history” by writing an autobiography, including a photo montage. Both of the components will be included in the final Movie Maker video. Checkpoint 1 will be to complete a questionnaire about personal and family history. Checkpoint 2 will be to submit a rough draft of their autobiography along with 4-5 personal photos.

Math

Students will show growth of a shape as it pertains to them using Flash animation. Checkpoint 1 - Students will choose one geometric figure with which that they can identify. They will then write a brief composition explaining why they chose their shape. Next they will illustrate a transformation of their shape by enlarging, transforming to a three dimensional shape, or changing to a completely different shape using paper and pencil. Checkpoint 2 - The students will write a one page story comparing the growth or the transformation of the shape to the growth in their personal lives. Students will use Flash animation to show the growth or transformation of their shape and incorporate it into the final Movie Maker project.

Science

“If I Were an Element” Students will create a digital poster detailing the chemical and physical properties of an element from the periodic table that relates to their own personal attributes or preferences. The poster will then be incorporated into the final Movie Maker project. For checkpoint 1, students will research elements from the periodic table and select one element with properties that personally connect to them to research in-depth. Students will then submit a graphic organizer outlining their element’s chemical and physical properties. For Checkpoint 2, students will submit a rough draft of their element poster created on MS Word or Publisher which will include both facts and pictures.

Technology

Using the Movie Maker application students will prepare a story board for a movie using components from each class. Checkpoint 1 - Student will create a folder in share drive for the project by opening Movie Maker; creating a new blank Movie Maker called “Self”. Checkpoint 2 - Students will create four titles for each component by preparing a place for each component’s text in Movie Maker.
