Huebner Basic School News The aim of the Basic School is not just to build a better school, but above all, to build a better world for children. Service learning contributes to a higher quality of life for everyone. Huebner Huskies are learning to give and treat others with compassion. A Basic School is an effective school. The idea that ties it all together is best described by the word "connections". A Basic school connects people, to create community. It connects curriculum, to achieve coherence. It connects classrooms and resources to enrich the learning climate. A Basic School connects learning to life, to build character. Huebner Huskies have been making many of these connections. Third grade students and teachers successfully held our 5th annual school wide Charity Election and Campaign. The students voted to adopt the non-profit organization "Any Baby Can" for this school year. This organization gives assistance to children who have a chronic illness or disability. Services are provided for children from birth through 12 years of age. Each month during the school year, a different grade level will make something personal and also collect needed items for the children. We are continuing our tradition at Huebner of "children helping children". We are starting a new tradition on Dec. 12. The student body will be divided into Reading Packs. Each pack will have kindergarten thru fifth grade students. They will meet three different times to listen to a story relating to one of the character traits and do an activity together. The goal of Reading Packs is to strengthen friendship and community among all students. This is another example of connecting classroom, community and character. |
