Assistant Principal's message

Hello all and welcome to our last few weeks of the 2011 – 2012 school year.  It has been a very eventful and fulfilling year.  We have completed the first ever STAAR Assessments for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, and the outdoor classroom and gardens are providing both beauty and learning opportunities for our classes.  We have been entertained by our Honor Choir (who have also presented around the city), and learned about Aesop’s Fables at our 3rd grade performance.  Most importantly, we have seen your children grow from their first day of this year to now.  But the year is not quite over as our teachers are still working hard with your children on a variety of classroom projects.  Ahead, we also have the 3rd grade Market Day, the 5th grade Talent Show, our Orffestra performance, as well as the end of the year 5th grade activities.
It is also that time of the year where we begin experiencing the beginning of the San Antonio summer when the temperatures are reaching into the 90’s.  As it is important your child dress comfortably for the heat, it is equally important to follow the district dress code.  There are two dress code concerns that come up the most this time of year.  First is that the boys like to wear sleeveless shirts or replica basketball jerseys.  If they choose to wear these, they must wear a t-shirt under these types of shirts at school.  The other is girls’ shorts that are too short.  To determine the correct length, the girl puts her arm down her side, and the hem of the shorts must be below her longest fingertip.  Being aware of these will keep students from being sent to the office for a change of clothes.
As this school year winds to a close, it is important to help our children keep focused.  It is still important to limit absences and tardies to as few a possible.  Any absences will require a signed and dated note (with the teacher’s name) within two days of your child’s return from an absence.  If a note arrives after that two day period, the day(s) will remain as unexcused absence(s).  Our school day begins at 7:40 a.m.  That time is also the Tardy Bell.  Please ensure your child is in the building in their classroom by the time that bell rings.  Tardies are not excused.  Teachers keep track of these dates so please check with them for numbers and/or specific dates.  Getting into the classroom in the morning with their friends and classmates will help your child’s day get off to better start.
Finally, as you have heard from your child’s teacher, one of the best ways you can help your child in school is to read with them and allow them to read to you each night. The more opportunities your child has to read, the better student they will become in all their subjects. Continue to share time with your child reading every evening.  It is a wonderful and fun way to spend time with your family.
Thank you all for the tremendous support you give all of Huebner Elementary School.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
