Huebner GT Robotics Club Wins Big at GEAR Games 2009
The Huebner GT Robotics Club, sponsored by Daryn Polanco, had a stellar day at their third GEAR competition on March 21st at the UTSA Convocation Center.
Both Huebner teams, The Gold Metal Droids and The All Stars, were in the top twelve out of 48 teams after the seeding rounds. In fact, the All Stars finished the preliminary rounds in first place and made it into the semi-finals! The All Stars eventually finished the tournament in fourth place, which was good enough to bring home a trophy. They also won the GEAR Head trophy, which was given to the team whose robots exhibited creative use of available materials to implement an unusual machine capability.
The teams have worked very hard over the past five weeks to create robots, using a LEGO Mindstorm base, which completed a series of Olympic sporting events, including basketball, power lifting, hockey, the ring toss, the tower of tug, and darts. It was great experience for all involved. Hopefully, we’ll have some future engineers born of the excitement of this competition.
Both teams would like to thank Mrs. Deanna Schattel and the Coker Robotics teams for hosting a scrimmage a few days before the competition. They feel that really helped them prepare for the big day. They would also like to thank their Principal, Terri Newman, their teachers, parents, friends, and family for all of the support they showed over the past few weeks. They know they couldn’t have done it without you!
