Destination Imagination is an organization where students learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Students solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. Team members have to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the Challenges. Students who participate do not just use basic knowledge and skills. They learn to let their imagination run wild and take unique approaches to problem solving.
This is the second year that Huebner has been a part of the Destination Imagination competition. We had three teams compete this year. Each team spent a lot of time meeting to solve their challenge. Two groups created a movie trailer in which two characters from different nations had to interact. They also had to design a cinematic special effect and create an original soundtrack that complemented the movie trailer. These two teams did a great job placing 6th and 13th out of 20 different teams!
The third team had the challenge to design and build equipment that retrieves parts and delivers products to another area. They had to assemble products from team-provided parts to fill orders and use the products in a presentation. They earned extra point by figuring out how to best fill orders with no parts or products left in the assembly area. Meanwhile, they also presented a team-created story about something that happened just in time. The group of boys built a piece of equipment that one team member had to move without the person touching the floor. This team created a gondola as their transportation that they used to get back and forth to the different areas. Four boys had to assemble over forty products in a very short amount of time. This group’s hard work showed when they received metals for second place in their challenge!
