The speech-language program at Huebner is provided for those children qualifying for support under the Texas Education Agency guidelines. The speech and language program encompasses many areas. We service any child with a communication difficulty that impedes him/her educationally according to the Texas Education Agency guidelines. We deal with sound production, dysfluency (stuttering), voice, and all areas of language. Below are some common characteristics of children that might qualify for our services:

v      significant articulation errors

v      difficulty following oral or written directions

v      lack of fluency in oral communication

v      hoarseness

v      too high or too low a volume on a consistent basis

v      difficulty retrieving words

v      uses many nonspecific words to substitute for specific words (i.e. thing)

v      doesn’t seem to understand humor or sarcasm

v      doesn’t understand multiple meaning words or phrases

v      doesn’t understand idioms

v      can understand what is said but has difficulty organizing words into correct language structures

v      difficulty remembering what has been said

v      difficulty relating events or stories orally or in writing

v      talks constantly but expresses few ideas

v      seldom talks- doesn’t participate orally

v      vocabulary appears limited

v      appears to have difficulty processing what she/he hears unless material is given slowly or repeated many times

v      misunderstands what is said to him/her

v      difficulty with inferences

v      difficulty understanding why he/she is in trouble or what was wrong

v      says “huh” or “what” frequently

v      speaks inappropriately to his friends or teachers

v      asks for frequent repetition or clarification difficulty rhyming, identifying sounds, or reading

Your child may show one or more of these characteristics and still be within the expected range of development. If you have concerns or questions about your child’s speech and language development, please contact us at 408-5525. We will be happy to answer your questions or begin the referral process to test your child. We begin testing children just before their third birthday and begin services on the third birthday.
