Curriculum
Language arts uses the Four Blocks Model of Literacy. This model incorporates lessons in phonics, self-selected reading, writing, and guided reading. Second grade has many opportunities to read a variety of texts. We focus on building fluency and comprehension skills with each type of literature. Our students learn to read and write independently. Writing gives the children a multitude of learning experiences including spelling, grammar, and reading.
In mathematics, students build a foundation of basic understanding in numbers, operations, and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry and spatial reasoning; measurement; and probability and statistics. Mathematics' concepts are mastered using a variety of strategies to help the students understand the language of math. Within a well-balanced mathematics curriculum, the primary focal points at second grade are comparing and ordering whole numbers, applying addition and subtraction, and using the measurement process.
The thematic units begin with social studies and science. Our students focus on a study of their local community during social studies. Our science units focus on such topics as the water cycle, the use of resources, and the characteristics of living organisms and nonliving objects. Throughout the year, your second grader will make discoveries, develop skills, and understand concepts within each of the units.
