Young Scientists is open to third and fourth grade students interested in the world of science. Students explore a wide variety of interesting and provocative subjects, such as astronomy, physics and the natural world. Meetings are held after school and guest lecture and field trips round out an informative and fun series of activities throughout the year. Third grade teacher Karen Sheppard is coordinator. The new Science Lab is up and running, and delights await the curious (and patient!). Parent volunteers are always welcome to roll up their sleeves and participate in the fun. If you would like to volunteer, contact the PTA Science Chairman. The Fourth Grade Science Fair is held each Spring. All fourth grade students submit individual or group projects. The Fifth Grade Wax Museum recreates each Spring the periods in American history through the Civil War by learning about the personalities who influenced it. Students pick an historical character, choose appropriate costume, prepare a short presentation of the character’s life and times, and arrange a tableau with other student "characters" that all grades can enjoy watching at the "museum." Math Olympiads provides an opportunity for students in 5th grade to engage in a variety of challenging math activities and problems and then test their knowledge through special contests. Family Math and Science Night will be held every other year (odd numbered years) at Hidden Forest. This event provides parents and children opportunities to explore and experiment with a variety of math and science activities. Family Reading Night is presented jointly by the Hidden Forest Staff and PTA every other fall (even numbered years). This evening fosters a love of reading through special guest readers and activities in which families can take part. Dinner is also served on this special evening of reading fun. Market Day teaches ‘free enterprise’ and basic marketing in this inventive program for fifth graders. Each student researches the making of a product, estimating the cost of materials, determining a selling price, and designing the related point-of-purchase display and signs. The young marketers then advertise their selling day to other students, inviting them to visit their "store" to purchase their products on Market Day, held each Spring. Buddies is a mentoring program that matches younger students with more experienced ones. Buddies spend time together working on projects, making things for each other, reading together and just enjoying each other's company. During the year, written and verbal communications between students strengthen friendship and individual self esteem. PE SHOWCASE is NEISD's physical education performance of elementary students. Routines are taught and refined during PE classes. Students who are able to execute the routines and make the performance represent our school. Each school participates every other spring. Hidden Forest is scheduled to perform each even year's spring. Parental permission signature and school t-shirt are required. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART, sponsored by The American Heart Association, visits our campus each spring. In PE classes, students learn and refine life-long skills in jump roping. Participation in fund raising is voluntary and requires a parental signature. Hidden Forest's 1999 event earned over $10,000 for the AHA. NEISD 4th and 5th GRADE TRACK AND FIELD EVENT, held every spring, give fourth and fifth graders the opportunity to participate in a district wide track and field afternoon at Blossom Field. The spring PE curriculum of track and field events enhances the students' competence in these areas. Students are selected by top qualifying times/distances and the ability to attend. Ribbons are awarded for events. Parental permission signature is required. ADEPT/Red Ribbon Week is a triple impact drug awareness, education, and prevention program. Connecting with every student every day of Red Ribbon Week, students participate in age-appropriate presentations and demonstrations from volunteers and campus visitors. Students wear their red ribbon all week to remind them of the powerful "Say No to Drugs" message, and the week ends with each student signing a personal 'No Drugs' pledge. The Family Health Fair is a bi-annual program sponsored by the Hidden Forest PTA HEALS/Health Education Committee. (HEALS means "Health Education Awareness Learning and Services.") Local representatives of health/medical organizations set up informational and interactive booths that focus on the many aspects of good health. There are no fees. The next scheduled fairs will be held in January of 2002 and 2004. The CHAMPION RECYCLING BIN is housed year-round on campus near the portable building, and everyone is encouraged to drop in all paper, magazines and cardboard. Our school is paid a per pound fee. BIKE RODEO is an annual event sponsored by the PTA and supported by the San Antonio Police Department and the local Optimists Club. The event teaches bike safety and skills to the students. A pre-event safety lecture is given by a SAPD school officer, and the Rodeo includes a bike inspection by the Officer and a skills ride. Trophies are awarded for the top three scores, for both girls and boys, in each grade, with each participant receiving a Bike Rodeo ribbon. A signed parental permission form, a qualified bike, and helmet are required. Christie Achilles is the awesome parent in charge of the event and we would like to thank her for all she does and thank those wonderful parents who volunteer to help Hidden Forest during this event. FUN IN THE FOREST, an annual PTA sponsored event, is a fun-filled field day for the entire school. Close to the end of the school year, this May event offers games and refreshments to the students, staff, and parents in our great outdoors! REFLECTIONS Art Competition is a National PTA sponsored contest that challenges students to use their talents in "the arts" to create a unique expression of an annual theme. The arts cover the visual arts, some language arts, and performing arts. The applications and submissions are due in the fall, with judging on local, district, state, and national levels. Hidden Forest students have been consistently honored for their talented efforts. YOUNG MASTERS is the NEISD elementary schools' own art recognition show. Each spring over 4,000 outstanding visual art entries are exhibited at Littleton Gym, Blossom Athletic Center. Hands-on art activities are offered during the show, inviting participation from all members of the student’s family. Teaching and arts staff select student work throughout the year for staging at this event. ‘Best of Show Awards’ are given for outstanding entries, and some artwork is ‘loaned’ for viewing at the District offices. ART A LA CARTE is the cultural and fine arts day at Hidden Forest that involves all grade levels in hands-on arts and crafts activities. Students can choose from a variety of activities and levels of complexity at individual centers, under the direction of PTA volunteers. Visiting artists provide instruction through demonstration, allowing students to try a particular technique themselves and take home a finished art piece. The FALCON CHOIR is open to fourth and fifth graders and is a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves vocally! Using their learned curriculum skills of reading music, the students can now move on to directed, multi-part numbers. The Choir generally meets for up to an hour after school once a week, beginning October. This is a wonderful opportunity to preview Choir, a middle and high school elective. The Choir performs at one general PTA meeting, Regent Care Nursing Home, and Hollywood Park Women's Club. Check the for events and practice times. STRINGS is the opportunity for fifth graders to receive a year of music lessons in violin, viola, cello, or bass in an on-campus setting. Instruction by a NEISD certified music teacher expands on the students’ previous curriculum of reading music while learning a specific instrument and ensemble technique. Students meet twice a week for one hour after school, and there is no lesson fee. Rental of instruments is the responsibility of the student's parents. Parental permission signature is required and class size is limited. Students perform at several on campus concerts, the NEISD String Festival, at one PTA general meeting. This is a fine preview opportunity to the middle and high school electives of band and orchestra. THEATER ARTS/MUSIC PRESENTATIONS. Several times a year, the music department is asked to present programs for the PTA's general meetings. These programs showcase voice, movement, school instruments, audience behavior skills, and theater arts skills. Grade levels vary. Parental permission signature is required for student participation. Fourth and fifth graders attend two symphony concerts a year. The FIFTH GRADE TALENT SHOW is a much-anticipated event where our talented fifth graders get to express themselves through a showcase of music, dance, drama and other special acts. The entire campus, and visiting friends and relatives, play audience to the hard-working classes who write and produce two full performances in May. The VISITING AUTHOR Program is sponsored by the PTA and is coordinated by our Librarian and the PTA Library Chairman. They give our children a most wonderful gift each year in the selection of a visiting author or poet to present or perform their work on campus. Mrs. Hughes prepares for each visit by making available the biographical sketch and selected readings from that writer. She will also preview the author’s work and discuss specific characters, making them come to life for these young readers. All students look forward to these authors’ visits! In the recent years we have been fortunate to experience:
SAFETY PATROLS is a community service organization, responsible for maintaining building and campus safety as students arrive and leave the campus. Patrols work either the am duty (7:15 - 7:45) or afternoon duty (2:35 - 3:00). Patrol Monitors work an abbreviated afternoon duty which allows them to catch their school bus. The Patrols and Monitors meet every 6 weeks during recess and have an end of the year party. REQUIREMENTS: Open to fifth graders Non-School Sponsored Activities Boy Scouts of America 341-8611 |
