Second graders now build on a solid foundation of reading and math skills to tackle more complex concepts in the subject areas of social studies, science, language, and health. At this level, students begin using oral, written, artistic, and mathematical expressions to communicate their understanding of the world. A variety of literary works is integrated into the curriculum to reinforce and enrich all ability levels. The Four Blocks Literacy Model is continued from first grade and Kinder. Technology is introduced as an integral learning and exploratory tool. The world of mathematics is discovered through units on money, time, addition/subtraction, probability, and distance. We use the Harcourt Math Advantage series and TERC Investigations, which offer more hands on experiences. Magical Math Moments for students and their parents combine fun and learning about math during a morning of challenging and interactive math activities. It occurs during Texas Public School Week. An interdisciplinary approach to learning creates fascinating units of study on the natural world, our people and histories, animals, ecology, and plant life. Our Science Lab also provides a close-up look at the (sometimes invisible) natural world. Some classes are tending a garden with love and pride throughout the year. |
