Second graders now build on a solid foundation of reading and math skills to tackle more complex concepts in the subject areas of social studies, science, language, and health.
At this level, students begin using oral, written, artistic, and mathematical expressions to communicate their understanding of the world. A variety of literary works are integrated into the curriculum to reinforce and enrich all ability levels. The Four Blocks Literacy Model is continued from first grade and Kinder. Technology is introduced as an integral learning and exploratory tool.
In second grade, we will be continuing to use the 4-Blocks multilevel framework for Language Arts and Reading. This program includes Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words. This program allows for varied opportunities for all children to progress in their reading and writing.
Our second grade math curriculum includes the use of hands-on, problem solving units using Investigations, the enVision Math Texas program, and other methods that support the second grade math TEKS. Mathematical concepts taught will follow this sequence:
An interdisciplinary approach to learning creates fascinating units of study on the natural world, our people and histories, animals, ecology, and plant life. Our Science Lab also provides a close-up look at the natural world.
Second graders also begin to learn cursive during the second half of the school year.
