Screenings

Screening programs are conducted in accordance with State Law and the Texas Department of Health.  Parents are contacted and a referral is sent by the school nurse, should a problem be noted. The child´s physician/dentist should return a report to the school nurse within 30 days.

School Screening Programs Conducted in NEISD:

VISION & HEARING SCREENING:  Students in Pre-K, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th graders are screened annually, as well as all new students to Texas and referrals for Special Education.

DENTAL SCREENING:  A dental screening and educational program is conducted annually in February for 3rd grade students.

HEIGHT & WEIGHT:  Students are weighed and measured annually  (September) in the Elementary Schools.

SPINAL SCREENING:  Students are screened for scoliosis in the 5th & 8th grades.

ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS SCREENING:  Each student in the 3rd, 5th, 7th grades is screened for a "skin marker" around the neck resulting from a higher concentration of insulin in the bloodstream, which creates a potential risk for the development of Type 2 Diabetes.  The weight and blood pressure will be taken on those students identified in the program.

Exemptions to Screenings are allowed as specified in State Regulations, please contact your School Nurse for information.

Should you need any information or assistance concerning your child´s health, development and/or screening, please call the school nurse at your child´s school.
