Textbooks Due on Campus
Textbook collection has begun on the Harris campus. All students are required to turn in all issued school textbooks. Please bring books back as soon as possible to avoid having to pay for unreturned books. Payment for lost books is due before Friday, June 6. Yearbooks Sales Wrapping Up Now
2013-2014 Harris Yearbooks are on sale now for a very limited time! Online sales ended on June 1, 2014. Yearbooks will only be for sale during grade level lunches May 28-30. The sales during lunches will be cash only! Yearbooks will be distributed on Wenesday, June 4 through advisory classes.
8th Grade Award Ceremony
The Harris 8th Grade Class of 2014 will celebrate its successes at the 8th Grade Awards Ceremony on June 5th, 2014. If your child will be receiving an award for an accomplishment, an invitation will be sent home with your child this week. The ceremony will be held in the Harris cafeteria beginning at 9:15am.
Historians Win Gold For Harris
Five students from Harris Middle School participated in the 75th Annual Meeting of the Junior Historians of Texas Competition in early April in Austin. All five students won their competition categories, bringing gold medals back to NEISD. Seventh graders Jackson Crowell and Adison Denham won first place for their group website “The United Nations: The Right and Responsibility to Protect Against Genocide.” Seventh graders Angela Canonizado and Miwa Stowers, along with a fellow classmate, won first place and a cash prize for their group exhibit, “The Immigration Experience.” Click here for the NEISD press release.
Harris Green Team Wins Team Up Challenge Award
On Monday, April 14th, The Harris Middle School Green Team was announced a Team Up Challenge Champion and awarded $20,000! With these funds, they hope to install a greenhouse to further their vision of bridging the school and community together by educating and serving. They would like to thank everyone for voting and for all of the support this year! The students and captains have worked tirelessly and couldn't be more proud! Harris Finalist for Do the Write Thing
8th grader Trevor Mitchell was selected as a finalist from more than 2,000 entries in the Do the Write Thing Challenge. The contest, judged by local officials, has students write on their perspective of violence and bullying. He was presented with a plaque and certificate by District Attorney Susan D. Reed at a reception held in late March. Congratulations Trevor!
Youth Fire Clothing Drive
The Harris Youth Fire group is currently accepting jeans and t-shirts to donate to needy teenagers in Honduras. Please bring in donations from April 16th through May 7th. Please bring donations to Mrs. Candelaria in D100. For more information, please contact Mrs. Grace or Ms. Stewart.
Harris Garden Wins Grant From Jamba Juice
Recently, the Harris Community Garden was selected a $500 grant from Jamba Juice as sponsored by the National Gardening Association. Harris was chosen as one of 20 winners from the nation in the "It's All About the Fruits and Veggies" Garden Grant contest. The Harris Community Garden was chosen "because of the exceptional nature of the work you are doing to enhance the lives of youth and the community in your area." Congratulations to Ms. Windwehen, Mrs. Trevino, and the Harris Green Team.
Battle of Flowers Holiday
Students and staff of Harris Middle School (and all other NEISD campuses) will enjoy a school holiday on Friday, April 25th. Enjoy the Battle of Flowers parade and Fiesta with you family and friends; Viva Fiesta!
Upcoming Holidays for Harris
There are two upcoming holidays for the students and staff of Harris Middle School and other NEISD school. On Friday, April 18th and Friday, April 25th there will be no school. Enjoy the time of with family and friends.
STAAR Spirit Week At Harris
During the week beginning on Monday, April 14th Harris Middle School will celebrate STAAR Spirit Week. Students are encourage to dress up and follow the daily them as we make the final push towards the STAAR exams. Monday is hats and backwards day, Tuesday is crazy sock and polka dots. Wednesday is tie and twin day; and it all wraps up on Thursday with sunglasses and camo day.
Great Results at History Contest
The Harris National History Day team brought home 5 first place medals from the 75th Texas Jr. Historians competition on Saturday, April 5th from Austin. Congratulations to the Harris students for taking 1st place in group websites with their site about the UN's role in preventing genocide and 1st place with their group exhibit about the immigration experience. The NHD team is sponsored by Mrs. Griffith. Way to go Hawks!
Harris Launches Online Newspaper
The Harris Middle School Newspaper Staff and Sponsor Mrs.Tindol are proud to launch Harris Headlines, the Harris online newspaper. They have been working all year on developing an online newspaper format that will provide news about the school as well as student interest stories for the Harris students, families and community. Harris Headlines will serve as the campus’ beacon of information by featuring teacher and student achievements, activities and sports. Please click here to visit the new page.
Vote for the Harris Garden
The Harris Community Garden and the Harris Green Team were named semi-finalists to receive a $20,000 award from the San Antonio Spurs through the Team Up Challenge. STAAR Testing Coming to Harris
STAAR testing will begin with testing for 7th and 8th grade students on Tuesday, April 1st and Wednesday, April 2nd. Parents, please be sure that your students arrive to school on time on testing days after a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast. Our campus will be closed to parents and other visitors on testing days. The second round of STAAR testing will begin on April 22nd and will include tests for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.
Harris Wellness Festival
Harris Middle School will host a family-friendly Wellness Festival on Friday, March 28th beginning at 5:00pm. The entire community is invited to participate in fun activities such as dodgeball, Zumba, and lasertag as well as enjoy performances by the Harris jazz band and choir. Spring Garden Clean Up
All are invited to join the Harris gardeners as they prepare the Harris Community Garden for a successful spring crop by cleaning up and planting. Please bring gloves and garden tools to help in the process. Clean up begins in the garden at 8am on Saturday, March 22nd.
Spring Break for Harris
Harris Middle School and all other North East ISD schools will enjoy Spring Break holidays for the week of Monday, March 10th through Friday, March 14th. All campuses will be closed for these school holidays. School will resume as usual on Monday, March 17th. Be safe and enjoy your break!
Spring Garden Class Scheduled
The students and sponsors of the Harris Community Garden are teaching an adult community education class on how to prepare and plant a spring garden on March 6th. It will take place in the Harris Garden from 4:30-6:30. If you're certain you are coming, please sign up as there are limited spots available! Boys Basketball Ends Season with Strong Showing
The 7th and 8th grade boys' basketball teams both competed in their End-Of-Season Tournaments On February 7th and 8th. The 7th grade Hawks, after losing initially, came back to win the consolation bracket against district foes. The 8th grade boys went undefeated in their tournament (including an impressive win over previously undefeated Bradley) as they were crowned tournament champions! Congratulations Hawks on a great basketball season.
Book Fair at Harris Library
The Scholastic book fair will be in the Harris Library for the week of February 24 through February 28. The book fair hours will be 8:45am until 3:30pm Monday through Thursday. Friday's hours are 8:45am until 12:00pm. Checks will be accepted for payment, but must be for the exact amount. For more information please contact our librarian, Mrs. Keranen.
Early Release Days for Parent Conferences
Harris Middle School (and other NEISD elementary and middle schools) will have early dismissal Tuesday, February 25th through Thursday, February 27th. These days will be used for parent/teacher conferences and staff development. School will dismiss at 1:25 for these three days. School will resume to normal schedule on Friday, November 28th.
Parent Night at Madison
The Madison High School Counselors are hosting Parent Night on Tuesday, Febraury 25th. The meeting will share important information on courses available to next year's freshman and the new graduation requirements that they will have. The meeting begins at 6:30pm in the Performing Arts Center on the Madison campus.
Introducing the Harris Community Garden
Many of you might know that behind our school is a thriving garden, but you might not be aware that we are transitioning this to be a fully working community garden. Our goal is to bridge community and school by way of our beautiful outdoor space. Additionally, we are in the process of gauging interest to better suit your wishes of involvement with this initiative. Specifically, we are looking to offer Community Ed classes, and would love to see if you're as excited about these as we are! Ms. Windwehen and her students proudly grow organic vegetables and compost with huge success and would love to share their knowledge. Weather Make-Up Day
Harris Middle School, as well as all other NEISD schools, will hold classes on Monday, February 17th. This class day will serve as make up for Friday, January 24th when classes were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Valentine's Day at Harris
Students, be ready to get flowers for someone special this Valentine's Day at Harris. The Student Council will be selling flowers for $1 each before school and during lunches in the cafeteria. Students will also be able to send "Heart-O-Grams" through NJHS. For 50 cents your sweetheart can receive a message and a lollipop. Orders will be taken at lunch.
Say Cheese for Spring Pictures
Spring portraits will be taken at Harris on Friday, February 7th. Portrait information will be sent home with interested students or can be picked up in the Harris office. Exact payment will be necessary at the time of the sitting for pictures to be taken.
Community Garden Hosting Vermicomposting Class
Join Ms. Windwehen, Mrs. Trevino, and the Harris Green Team in a free Community Ed vermicomposting class. The class will be held on Thursday, January 30 at 4:30pm at the Harris Community Garden. Worms and bins provided! Click on this link for information and sign-up. Limited space available!
The Harris Spelling Bee
Last week's Spelling Bee has been rescheduled for Friday, January 31st at 4:30pm - 6:30pm in the Harris cafeteria. The winner of this event goes onto compete in the citywide Scripps SA Express News Spelling Bee held at Trinity University on Saturday, February 8th. The winner of that spelling bee goes onto compete in a national spelling bee in Washington, DC. For questions or comments, please contact Ms. Johnson.
Harris Electives Showcase
The Harris Counselors will be hosting the Elective Showcase for the 2014-2015 school year on Tuesday, January 28th. Counselors and elective teachers will be on hand to discuss classes available to students for the 2014-2015 school year. The information for incoming 5th graders will be shared in the Harris Cafeteria. Students currently in 6th and 7th grades will be discussed in the Harris Library. Presentations begin at 6:00pm. Parent Meeting About Tech Safety
The Harris Counselors invite all parents of Harris students to a presentation on Tuesday, January 21st. The topics discussed will include Internet safety, popular social media sites, and cyberbullying. The 8th grade ReadiStep test and results will also be discussed. Harris Presents The Wizard of Oz

Harris students will bring home their report cards from the 2nd nine weeks on Friday, January 10. Parents, please review these with your students and sign the bottom portion to return to school.
Harris Spanish Club Donates Nearly a Ton of Food
The Harris Spanish Club recently concluded a food drive for the San Antonio Food Bank. The club collected canned goods and other non-perishable food items to help needy people in our community. In all, the drive collected 1,844 pounds of food to donate. Thank you Harris community for your generosity!
Winter Holidays at Harris
Harris Middle School students and staff will break for the winter holidays Monday, December 23, 2013 through Friday, January 3, 2014. Enjoy your time with family and friends and be safe in all travels. School will resume as normal on Monday, January 6, 2014.
Harris Fine Arts Offer Numerous Performances
The Harris Fine Arts Department will be hosting several performances in the next two weeks of school. The Harris Beginning Band held their Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec 12 and the Advanced Bands Winter Concert will be on Monday, December 16th. On Tuesday, December 17th the Harris Orchestra will host their holiday performance. The entire Harris community is invited to enjoy these upcoming performances. Blue Santa Toy Drive
The Harris Student Council is sponsoring a holiday toy drive for Blue Santa. Please bring your new, unwrapped toys for any age child to room A105 now through December 13th. The toys will be distributed by the San Antonio Police Department to needy families through the holidays. Please contact Ms. DeCastro for more information.
Harris Community Garden Composting Class
On Thursday, December 5th, come learn from Master Gardener and Harris Middle School 7th Grade Science Teacher, Ms. Loryn Windwehen and her Green Team Students in Composting 101 Class. Participants will leave with their own upcycled kitchen composter, several options for creating their own bin/pile, and a step-by-step introduction in this organic process. Thanksgiving Holidays at Harris
Harris students and staff will be off November 25 through November 29 for Thanksgiving break. Enjoy the time off with family, friends and food. School will resume as normal on Monday, December 2.

Spanish Club Sponsors Food Drive
The Harris Spanish Club is currently sponsoring a food drive to donate to the San Antonio Food Bank. Or campus goal is to donate over 1000 pounds of food for the needy people of our area before the holidays. Any non-perishable food item may be donated. Drive ends November 21st. Pennies for Patients Results
Thank you to all who donated to the Pennies for Patients drive recently at Harris Middle School. The 6th graders raised the most money to "Pie the Principal" and Mrs. Griffith's class donated the most for their favorite teacher. In all the drive raised more than $3000 for the Leukemia Foundation.
Harris Marathon Challenge
Harris Middle School is encouraging everyone to get moving by participating in our Marathon Challenge. The goal of the Marathon Challenge is to run or walk the 26.2 miles of a marathon over a span of 6 weeks. Students, staff and parents are invited to participate in the program. 7th Grade Football District Champions
Congratulations go out to the Harris 7th Grade football teams as they have won the district championship for the season. The title was secured with a goal line stand late in Tuesday's final game against rival Lopez Middle School. Congratulations to Coach Creighton, Coach Flores, and Coach Justice on leading their teams to a combined record of 14-1-1. Way to go Hawks!!!
Harris Green Team Gardeners Win Big Award
Congratulations to the Harris Green Team for being chosen as a semi-finalist and winning $2500 in the Silver and Black Give Back initiative. The group plans to use the award to continue to grow the garden and work toward future plans of a farmer's market. Thank you to the Silver and Black Give Back charity for the support of this community project. Early Release - November 5th through November 7th
Harris Middle School will be following an early release schedule Tuesday, November 5th through Thursday, November 7th. These early release days are used to hold teacher-parent conferences for Harris students. School will release at 1:25pm on these three days. The school schedule will resume as normal on Friday, November 8th.
1st Nine Weeks Report Cards
Harris students were given their 1st Nine Weeks report cards on Friday, November 1st. Please review the information with your student, sign the bottom portion, and return it with your child the week of Monday, November 4th.
Red Ribbon Week at Harris

Pennies for Patients Drive
On October 14th, Harris Middle School began its Pennies for Patients drive for the Leukemia Foundation. Our campus goal is to surpass last years collected amount of $3000. This year's collection will include many fun opportunities for those that share including eating outside and "Pie the Principal". For more information please contact Mrs. Griffith.
ReadiStep Test Information
On October 29, 2013 the Harris 8th graders will be completing the ReadiStep Assessment. The ReadiStep helps students and schools understand what skills students have and what skills they need to develop further if they are going to be college-ready students. Harris Drama to Present Charlotte's Web
The Harris Drama Department is proud to present "Charlotte's Web" to the Harris community. The first presentation, October 23rd at 3:45 pm, is open only to Harris students and will cost $3 per ticket. The play will run for the public on three evenings, October 24th through 26th, in the Harris Cafeteria. The ticket price is $5. Showtime each evening is 7:00pm.

Holiday for Harris Students

Fundraiser Money Due
All money collected for the Harris campus-wide fundraiser was due on Tuesday, September 24th. Students may still turn in money and order forms to their 1st period teacher. Please be sure that all orders are paid for before forms are turned in at Harris.
Our New Principal, Dr. Sean Maika
The Harris family welcomes our new leader, Dr. Sean Maika, to the campus. Dr. Maika comes to NEISD bringing experience and energy to Harris Middle School.
Harris Greenback Night
Parent of Harris students are invited to attend the Harris Greenback Night on Tuesday, September 10th. The PTA begins the evening with a meeting in the cafeteria at 5:45 pm. Parents will then get the chance to visit their students' classes and meet each of their teachers. The evening will conclude at 8:00pm.
New Student Registration, Information, Supplies
NEISD provides for online registration for new students. Please visit the NEISD Online Registration Portal and follow all directions closely to complete the process. Registration will continue on August 21 through August 23 from 8:00am through 3:00pm. If you can not make it during this time, you will need to report to the counseling office on Monday, August 26th with the following documents: Registration paperwork, previous report card, parent's drivers license, student's original birth certificate, proof of residence, immunization records, student's Social Security card. Important Forms Sent Home With Students
On Monday, August 26th, many important forms were sent home with Harris students. Parents, please take time to read and sign these forms with your students as many are required for our campus. When complete, insure that these forms are returned with your student to their 4th period teacher. Thank you Hawk parents!
Labor Day Holiday
Monday, September 2 is a holiday for Harris students and staff in honor of Labor Day. Enjoy your long weekend with your family.
Summer Immunization Clinics
During the summer, there will be numerous providers offering the immunizations necessary for students to have previous to the 2013-2014 school year. Harris Hawks Camp
All Harris students are invited to attend Hawk Camp. At Hawk Camp you can get a jump on the school year by getting your books, finding your locker, and picking up your PE clothes. Girls Athletics Summer Information
Sports physicals for ALL Girls' sports are due by August 15th. (NEISD Athletics Forms) They can be turned in to the front office at any time, or to the coaches working Summer Rec during the month of June, 8:00am-12:00pm. Please plan on stopping by the Girls' gym August 15th between 10:00am and 3:00pm to turn in or fill out any missing paperwork, get lockers, and receive volleyball try-out information. Summer and the Active Brain
During the summer, watch for e-mails with ideas for lessons that Harris students can complete while on vacation. These lessons will help to keep the students' minds active and energized. To access the lessons at any time, visit Mrs. Robinson's site. The lessons are not required, but they are recommended.
PE Uniform and Summer Recreation Forms
The Harris Athletics Department will once again host a Summer Recreation Program beginning June10th for children ages 7 through 13. Please click here for the registration form.
