Texbook Turn In Date Set

 

On Thursday, May 16 all students at Harris Middle School will be turning in their textbooks. The collection will take place through the students' math classes. Please make sure that all textbooks are brought in from home to be returned on that date.

 

 

8th Grade Awards Ceremony

 

The Harris Administrators and 8th Grade teacher will celebrate the accomplishments of the 8th grade class on Monday, May 13th. Students that are being recognized and their families are invited to the 8th Grade Award Ceremony beginning at 5:30pm in the Harris Cafeteria.

 

 

PTA Hosts 8th Grade Dance

 

The Harris Middle School PTA will present the 2013 8th Grade Dance on Friday, May 10th. The dance will be held in the Harris cafeteria. Admission and snacks will be free for 8th grade students.

 

 

Best Selling Author to Visit Harris

 

Author Adam Gidwitz, best-selling author of A Tale Dark and Grimm will visit with students in the Harris Library on Monday, May 6th. Mr. Gidwitz will visit with students during class time as well as an exclusive meeting with Harris Book Club members. For more information, please contact Mrs. Darilek in the Harris Library.

 

 

Mrs. Griffith Wins Prestigious Award

 

6th grade history teacher Mrs. Dottie Griffith was recently name Regional National History Day Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Griffith has coached many Harris students on to state and national level contests in the National History Day events. For more information about her award, please click here. NJHS Induction Ceremony

 

The Harris National Junior Honor Society will host its annual induction cerermony on Wednesday, May 1. The ceremony officially inducts eligible students into the group of outstanding members. Students must excel in academics and behavior to qualify. The ceremony begins at 7:00pm in the Harris cafeteria. For more information, please contact Miss O'Keefe.

 

 

Fiesta Holiday for Students and Staff

 

Students and staff will enjoy a break from school to enjoy Fiesta on Friday, April 26th. The holiday coincides with the Battle of Flowers Parade; enjoy the parade and festivities with your family. School will resume as normal on Monday, April 29th.

 

 

Make-Up Day for STAAR Testing

 

Students absent during STAAR testing will be taking make up tests on Thursday, April 26. The Harris Library will be the site of the make up testing and therefore will be closed during the testing.

 

 

Spirit Week at Harris Middle School

 

The week of April 15th through April 19th will be filled with fun dress up days as we prepare for STAAR testing the next week. Be ready to dress the part as we show our Harris spirit and get motivated to pass the STAAR test! Look on the bulletin board below for each days specific dress theme!

 

 

Spanish Club Hosts Children's Shelter Collection

 

The Harris Spanish Club is currently accepting donations to share with the San Antonio Children's Shelter. Students are encouraged to bring items including diapers, wipes, gift cards, and healthy snacks to donate to the cause. The collection will continue until April 18, 2013.

 

 

STAAR Testing to Begin on Harris Campus

 

On Tuesday, April 2nd and Wednesday, April 3rd Harris 7th and 8th grade students will be taking STAAR tests during the school day. Parents, please make sure that your children get plenty of rest and a healty breakfast. Also, please make every effort to have your student at school on time for the entire day. Thank you for your help.

Students and staff of Harris Middle School will enjoy a school holiday on Friday, March 29th. School will resume as normal on Monday, April 1st. Enjoy the long weekend with family!

 

 

Let's get Moving: Walk or Bike to School

 

As spring rolls in and the weather warms up, let's get moving by walking or biking to school each day. We want as many people as possible to walk or ride during the week of February 4th through February 8th. Besides saving our parents gas and time, a morning walk is healthy and sets the tone for a great day!

 

Harris Choir Successful at Spring Contest

 

The Harris Choir recently competed at their UIL spring contest. The Harris Varsity and Junior Varsity choir both received Sweepstakes awards while the Mens’ choir received a first division for their concert.  Way to go Choir!!!

 

 

Mrs. Trevino Wins Trinity Prize for NEISD

Mrs. Lacey Trevino, Harris Middle School Art Teacher, has been selected as the 2012-2013 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award for North East ISD. The Trinity Prize was launched in 1982 to honor public school teachers who distinguish their teaching practice through outstanding classroom performance, leadership in the school and school district, leadership in the education profession, and outstanding community service. Academic Pep Rally for 3rd Nine Weeks

 

On Friday, March 22nd, Harris Middle School will recgonize the academic accomplishments of students during the 3rd nine weeks at the Academic Pep Rally. Students, selected by their teachers will receive awards for outstanding work in each subject area. The Pep Rally for 6th grade will be held 1st period, 8th grade during 2nd period, and 7th grade during 3rd period. Way to go Hawks!

 

 

Harris on Spring Break

 

Harris Middle School will be on Spring Break vacation during the week of March 11th through March 15th. Students and staff will be on vacation and the campus offices will be closed. School will resume as normal on Monday, March 18th.

 

 

Harris Spring Festival

 

On Friday, March 1st from 5pm until 8pm, Harris Middle School will be hosting its Spring Festival. Harris Middle School organizations will be hosting food booths with treats such as pizza, popcorn, sausage wraps and more. Games will include a climbing wall, dunking booth and dodgeball tournament. Bring your whole family for an evenign of fun!

Harris Students Have Great Run of Musical

 

The Harris Choir and Drama departments presented the musical "Throuroghly Modern Millie, Jr." recently for the Harris community. The shows were a hit. Congratulations to the cast and crew for hosting wonderful performances.

Besides a newsletter, this page has a calendar that lists events in and around San Antonio that promote fitness. Please contact Coach Keogh for more info or to add an event. For another active opportunity, join the Hawks on the track each Wednesday for Wellness Wednesday. Students, teachers, and parents are invited to walk or jog the track beginning at 7:30am for thirty minutes of exercise each week. For each lap completed you will receive a bead to create a necklace. Let's get moving Hawks!

 

Presidents' Day Holiday for Students

 

In honor of Presidents' Day, Monday, February 18th is a student holiday at Harris Middle School. The day will serve as a Staff Development Day, therefore teachers will be on campus and the school offices will be open. The school schedule will resume as normal on Tuesday, February 19th.

 

 

Say Cheese! Spring Picture Day is Coming

 

Spring portraits will be taken at Harris on Friday, February 15th. Any student wishing to take pictures must bring payment that day for the sitting. No pictures will be taken of students without money. Packets with information and prices were sent home last week with Harris students.

 

 

Harris To Celebrate Out of This World Day

 

On Friday, February 8th Harris will be celebrating the 18th anniversary of Dr. Bernard Harris's space walk by having "Out of This World" Day. Students are encouraged to wear creative space related attire for this day. Costumes are allowed as long as they adhere to dress code.

 

 

Boys Basketball End of Season Tournament

 

The Harris Boys' Basketball teams will be wrapping up their season with District tournaments. The games will be played on Thursday, January 31st through Saturday, February 2nd. The 8th grade tournament will take place at Lopez Middle School and the 7th grade tournament will be at Garner Middle School. Go Hawks!!!

 

 

Madison Course Fair

 

Current 8th graders that are planning to attend Madison High School next year are invited to attend the Madison Course Fair on Tuesday, January 29th. Information will be available on core and elective classes, class selection, and extracurricular activities including athletics. Activities begin at 6:00pm at the Madison Performing Arts Center.

 

 

Harris to Host Parent Info Meetings for 2013-2014 Classes

 

On the evening of Tuesday, January 22nd, Harris Middle School will hold meetings for parents regarding classes available to their students during the 2013-2014 school year. Meeting for parents of current 6th and 7th graders begins at 6pm in the Cafeteria. The meeting for current 8th grade parents begins at 7 pm in the Harris Library. 2nd Nine-Weeks Report Cards Distributed

 

On Friday, January 11th, report cards for the 2nd nine week grading period will be sent home with Harris students. Parents, please review these important documents with your students.

 

 

Martin Luther King Holiday

 

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, Harris Middle School will have a holiday for students and staff on Monday, January 21st. School will resume as normal on Tuesday, January 22nd.

New Fish Pond Members

 

A new group of Harris Hawks were selected to join the "FISH Pond" for being outstanding people this past week. Congratulations to AJ, Valerie, Avery, Marianne, Caleb, Joey, Andrew, Makhayla, and Makayla for being selected.

 

 

Harris Student Council Successful Toy Drive

Winter Break for Harris Middle School

 

Harris students and staff will have school holidays from Monday, December 24th until Friday, January 4th. We hope that all of the Harris families have a peaceful holidays and safe travels during this break. School will resume as normal on Monday, January 7th.

 

 

Harris Winter Concert Series

 

The Harris Music Department will be hosting 3 concerts during the week of December 10th. On Monday, December 10th, the Harris Choir will presnet their Winter Concert with the community. On Tuesday, December 11th, the Harris Beginning Band will share their music. On Thursday, December 13th, the Advanced band will perform for all to hear. Finally, the Harris Orhcestra will perform for their Holiday Concert on Monday, December 17th. All concerts will begin at 7:00pm in the Harris Cafeteria.

 

 

Holiday Food Drive is a Record-Breaking Success

 

The Harris Spanish Club donated the largest amount of food ever collected from their annual food drive to the San Antonio Food Bank. The donation of 2,807 pounds of food was collected during the month-long food drive on the Harris campus. Thank you Harris Hawks for showing such generosity during this holiday season.

Fish Pond Grows with Seven More Students

 

Congratulations go out to seven more Harris students that were selected to join the Fish Pond for exhibiting the FISH characteristics at school. Evan, Madeline, Joey, Kenneth, Hayden, Shannon, and Jennifer were picked by their teachers to join the awesome group. Way to go!

 

Harris Library Hosts Book Club Meetings

 

The Harris Library will be holding its Book Club meetings on Tuesday, December 4th. The Student Book Club will meet at 7:45am and 3:45 pm. The Parent/Student Book Club is meeting the same day beginning at 6:00pm. All meetings will be held in the Harris Library. Please contact Mrs. Downen for more information.

 

Thanksgiving Holidays for Students and Staff

 

Harris Middle School will have student and staff holidays for Thanksgiving from Monday, November 19th until Friday, November 23rd. School will resume as normal on Monday, November 26th.

 

 

Spanish Club Food Collection

 

The Harris Spanish Club is wrapping up a food drive on the Harris campus. Please bring food to help the group reach their goal of donating 1,000 pounds of food to the San Antonio Food Bank. The collection will go until November 15th. For more information, please contact Mrs. Candelaria.

 

 

Girls' Basketball Parent Meeting and Tryout Information

 

Girls' Basketball tryouts will be held at 6:30am November 12-14 for 8th graders and at 6:30am on November 13-15 for 7th graders. (Girls must attend all three days of tryouts.) The Girls' coaches will meet with Basketball parents on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:00pm in the Cafeteria.

The Harris Boys' Basketball Coaches are excited to hold team tryouts on Monday, November 5th after school. Parents of basketball players need to attend the Parent Information Meeting on Thursday, November 8th at 5:45pm in the Gym.

 

 

Harris Talent Show

 

See singers, dancers, a unicycle, pianists and more at the Harris Student Talent Show on Thursday, November 8th. Show begins at 4:30pm in the Cafeteria. Tickets will be available for $5 at the door. Concessions will be available.

 

 

Harris Fundraiser Product Delivery

 

On Wednesday, November 7th, the frozen cookie dough and other products sold during the campus-wide fundraiser will be delivered to the Harris campus. Please make arrangements to pick-up all orders at campus between 3pm and 6pm as students with large orders will not be allowed to take products on the bus. Please bring your pink order form with you to the cafeteria as you pick up the prodcuts your student sold. Thank you for your help!

 

 

Final Week of Harris Football and Volleyball

 

The Harris football and volleyball teams will see their last action of the year this week. The Harris football teams will play against Lopez MS for their final game on Tuesday. The Lady Hawks will wrap up their season this week, playing Lopez on Thursday and district tournament on Saturday. For specific times and locations, please click the "Athletics" link above. Academic Pep Rally

 

The Harris Hawks will celebrate success in the classroom for the first 9-weeks on Friday, November 2nd. We will have a Purple and Gold Spirit Day and Academic Pep Rally to recognize some outstanding Hawks. The 8th Grade Pep Rally will begin at 8:20, 7th Grade at 9:11, and 6th grade at 10:00. Fall Picture Retakes

 

If you and your student are unhappy with the school portraits that were taken earlier this year, Lifetouch Studios will be back on Friday, October 26th to take retakes. Please return all purchased portraits in the original envelope on Friday to insure that retakes can be taken.

 

 

Red Ribbon Week at Harris

 

Monday, October 22nd through Friday, October 26th is Red Ribbon Week at Harris Middle School. As we promote being drug-free we are having a week of special dress up days on campus. Monday is Red Day, Tuesday dress like twins with someone, Wednesday dress backwards, Thursday wear neon colors, and on Friday dress like a nerd.

 

 

Theater Presents "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

 

The Harris Theater Arts Department will present "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" to the Harris community beginning on Thursday, October 25th. The play will run for three nights, October 25th through October 27th. Showtime each night is 7:30 pm in the Harris Cafeteria. Tickets will be available at the door.

Pink Week at Harris Middle School

 

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Harris Middle School is celebrating "Pink Week". Hawks are encouraged to wear pink clothing all week, especially to the football and volleyball games. Harris Pink Week shirts are still available. The shirts are available from Coach Morales for $8.

 

 

8th Grade ReadiStep Testing

 

On Thursday, October 18th the Harris 8th graders will be taking the ReadiStep test. The test identifies areas that students may need to focus on as they prepare for high school, as well as areas that they may be able to take advanced classes in. Harris PALs Support HEB Literacy Project

 

As one of their community service projects, the Harris PAL class chose to participate in the HEB Literacy Project. HEB wants to collect 1 million books for the children in South Texas. The Harris PALs collected 75 books for the project.

Fundraiser Deadline Extended

 

All fundraiser money and order forms are now due on Tuesday, October 9th. Please be sure that all forms are complete and ready to be turned in to 1st period teachers on Tuesday morning. Thank you for your help!

 

 

Student Holiday: Monday, October 8th

 

Students at Harris Middle School can enjoy a three day weekend as Monday, October 8th is a holiday for them. Faculty and staff will report for a Staff Development day. School will resume as normal on Tuesday, October 9th.

6th Grade InView Testing

 

Harris Middle School 6th graders will be taking the InView Assessment on Tuesday, Octobe 2nd. The InView test is a standardized test that measures abilities in verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative reasoning. The assessment helps with student placement, recognizing Gifted and Talented candidates and students possibly eligible for other programs. Please click here for more information.

 

Academic UIL Applications

 

If your student is interested in participating in Academic UIL for the 2012-2013 school year, the time has come to sign up. Please have the student visit with Mrs. James in room D202 to pick up the application. Forms are due back to her by Friday, September 21st.

 

 

Harris Talent Show Tryouts

 

Tryouts for the Harris Middle School Talent Show will be held on September 27th and 28th. In order to audition, you will need to complete a registration form from Mrs. Griffith in room A106. All registrations must be returned by Friday, September 21 to be eligible. For more information, please contact Mrs. Griffith.

 

 

Harris Hawk Football

 

Please note that older football schedules may incorrectly show Harris versus Eisenhower on Tuesday, September 18th. The game will be played on Wednesday, September 19th with the games beginning at 4:30pm. The 7th grade games will be at Harris, the 8th grade will play at Eisenhower.

 

8th Grade Panoramic Pictures

 

Panoramic pictures of the 8th grade class will be taken on the morning of Monday, September 17th. The pictures will be sold on campus for a price of $15 for a medium sized picture and $25 for a large laminated picture.

 

First NJHS Meeting of 2012-2013

 

The NJHS will meet for the first time this school year on Thursday, September 13th. The mandatory meeting will begin 7:45am in room A200. Please see Ms. Zertuche for more information about the meeting or National Junior Honor Society.

 

Student Book Club

 

Student Book Club applications are due back to the library by the end of the day on Friday, September 7th. Please see Mrs. Downen in the library for more information about the application or Student Book Club.

 

 

Harris Garden Clean-Up Day

 

Grass and weeds took over the Harris Garden this summer. The Harris Master Gardeners could use your help in restoring it to its previous beauty. Please bring your gloves and garden tools on Saturday, September 8th at 8am to the garden to help clean-up this important space. Water and light refreshments will be shared with those that help.

 

Online Student Registration - New Information

 

To expedite new student registration, NEISD encourages parents to use the NEISD Online Student Registration Page. Printed online registration forms and required documents may be brought to the Harris Counseling Office. Others registering at the school should also bring the required documents to the Counseling Offic. This will permit new students to be enrolled with minimal delays or to update returning students' information more easily. Summer Immunization Clinics

 

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is sponsoring immunization clinics throughout the summer to help students in our area comply with vaccine requirements. Please click for a list of Summer Vaccination Clinics.

 

 

Summer Reading Information & Pre-AP Assignments

 

Please encourage your student to read over the summer to stop the "summer reading slide". Help students maintain skills and promote independent study by having students read the books on the appropriate summer reading list. All Pre-AP students are required to complete a summer reading project. The Harris 6th Grade Camp will be held on Wednesday, August 22nd from 1:00 - 5:00pm. Come to get your books, meet your teachers, learn your schedule, and find your locker. Boys Athletics Summer Camps

 

Mark your calendars for the following athletic camps and strength and conditioning camps at Madison High School. It is very beneficial and highly recommended to participate in the camps to improve your athletic strength, speed, and skills for the 2012-2013 school year. Basketball camp – June 11-14, Baseball Camp – June 12-15, Strength and Conditioning Camp – June 11- July 26, Football Camp – August 6-9. The forms for each camp can be downloaded from Madison High School Athletics. Fall Football practice will begin on Monday August 27th. Summer Recreation Program

 

Harris Middle School will be hosting a summer recreation camp for the month of June. the camp is open to students ages 7-13 and will be held June 4 through June 29 from 8:00am - 12:00pm.
