Second Grade

Social Studies  Our curriculum is centered around Neighborhoods and Communities.  The students learn about the different types of communities and how they grow and change.  Emphasis is placed on using map skills to locate countries and continents and their relationship to our own communities and neighborhoods. 

Science We use simple investigations to develop science skills and learn about our natural world.

Language Arts/Reading This block centers around the FOUR BLOCKS CURRICULUM written by Patricia Cunningham.  It is made up of four different areas:

Working with Words  The WWW block utilizes multi-sensory interactive strategies to increase the child's knowledge of words and decoding skills.

Guided Reading  This block provides an opportunity for individualized reading instruction with teacher support.

Self-selected Reading  The SSR block gives the students the opportunity to choose books on their individual reading level to develop silent reading skills.

Writing In the writing block children learn the various skills needed to become better writers.  They utilize the writing process to develop and fine-tune their work.

Math The math curriculum ( TERC ) uses an investigative approach to problem solving.  The various strands that are covered include:  Number Patterns, Probability & Statistics, Geometry, Algebraic Thinking, Measurement, and Multiplication & Division.  In addition, the basic facts are reviewed.
