Fourth Grade Welcome to Fox Run Fourth Grade The Language Arts
curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills. Reading and writing are major components in the fourth grade
classroom. Both reading and writing skills are integrated throughout the
curriculum. Students are taught the Six Traits of Writing. They are taught
the grammar, usage, capitalization, and punctuation necessary to
communicate in written expression. Students adapt their written and spoken
language to the audience, purpose, and the occasion. Fourth graders read a
variety of topics. Small group instruction and Literacy Stations are
methods used to enhance the learning environment and address the learning
needs and styles of the students. A
TAKS Writing test is given in February. The Math
curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills. The primary focus is on comparing and ordering fractions and
decimals, applying
multiplication and division, and developing ideas related to congruence
and symmetry. Fourth grade is a continuation of the foundation set in the
earlier grades in number operations, patterns, quantitative reasoning,
relationships, algebraic thinking, and probability and statistics. An
emphasis is placed on problem solving. The TERC Investigations, Marilyn
Burns, and Exemplars are three of the main resources used. A TAKS Math
test is given in April. The Science
curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills. Students learn about the natural world and living and
non-living systems. They
investigate the differences between learned characteristics and inherited
traits. Students study the physical properties of matter. Students conduct
investigations and use the scientific process. The Social Studies
curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills. Fourth graders study the history of Texas from the early
beginnings to present day. They continue building a foundation in
geography, economics, government, citizenship, science, technology and
society. Possible field trips may include an expeditionary learning trip
