Fourth Grade

Welcome to Fox Run Fourth Grade

The Language Arts curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Reading and writing are major components in the fourth grade classroom. Both reading and writing skills are integrated throughout the curriculum. Students are taught the Six Traits of Writing. They are taught the grammar, usage, capitalization, and punctuation necessary to communicate in written expression. Students adapt their written and spoken language to the audience, purpose, and the occasion. Fourth graders read a variety of topics. Small group instruction and Literacy Stations are methods used to enhance the learning environment and address the learning needs and styles of the students.  A TAKS Writing test is given in February.

The Math curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The primary focus is on comparing and ordering fractions and decimals, applying multiplication and division, and developing ideas related to congruence and symmetry. Fourth grade is a continuation of the foundation set in the earlier grades in number operations, patterns, quantitative reasoning, relationships, algebraic thinking, and probability and statistics. An emphasis is placed on problem solving. The TERC Investigations, Marilyn Burns, and Exemplars are three of the main resources used. A TAKS Math test is given in April.

The Science curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Students learn about the natural world and living and non-living systems.  They investigate the differences between learned characteristics and inherited traits. Students study the physical properties of matter. Students conduct investigations and use the scientific process.

The Social Studies curriculum is based on the standards set by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Fourth graders study the history of Texas from the early beginnings to present day. They continue building a foundation in geography, economics, government, citizenship, science, technology and society. Possible field trips may include an expeditionary learning trip to the Sauer-Beckman Farm and the Alamo.
