Welcome to Fox Run First Grade
In first grade, we believe that children who are good readers and writers will be better, happier students and citizens. We are using a method of instruction called the Four Blocks of Literacy. Please join us this year as we explore each
block.
Guided Reading Block
- We focus on reading comprehension skills and strategies that help readers make sense out of print on a page. We also work on reading fluency - the smoothness with which we read text.
Self Selected Reading
- Students will have an opportunity to see themselves as readers and will build their fluency and reading ability.
Writing Block
- Students will learn to think about and use their knowledge of phonics to write compositions. They will also have an opportunity to practice penmanship, to learn about the writing process, grammar and the mechanics of
good writing.
Working with Words Block
- Students explore words, word families, spelling. The Four Blocks Method has proven to be quite effective for the schools that implement it. We are working hard to learn to use this method. Many curriculum Areas can be integrated into the Four Blocks of literacy.
Our students engage in real, meaningful, hands on math investigation. These activities require them to think and reason mathematically on a daily basis and communicate and justify their mathematical ideas, orally and in written form.
They work in a variety of settings; alone, small group and whole class. We invite you to come and visit to see how your child is learning and growing.
