TWo Reagan Quartets Perform At Houston Saxophone Competition
On Saturday May 17th, Ronald Reagan High School students traveled to the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music to compete in the Houston Underground Saxophone Quartet Competition. Eight Saxophone players, making up two saxophone quartets played in the competition that included over 120 competitors, making Houston Underground the country’s largest Saxophone Chamber Ensemble Competition.
Both the Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet and the Skip Garibaldi Saxophone Quartet played extremely well for judges that included saxophone professors from all over the country including professors from Baylor, Northwestern and Stephen F. Austin Universities. Judges were extremely complimentary of the way that both groups played and out of the over 25 saxophone Quartets that competed in the competition. The Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet placed 3rd, earning a $150 Cash Prize! Both the Skip Garibaldi and the Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartets received ‘Superior’ ratings at the UIL Region Solo and Ensemble Contest. All of these students have been working toward both the Houston Underground Competition as well as the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest which will be held on Saturday May 24th and Monday May 26th.
The Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet features Reagan Sophomore Bryant Anderson, Juniors Will Pyle and Paityn Tiller, and Senior Tristan Torres. Quid Nuncs program included “July” by Michael Torke and “Andante et Scherzo” by Eugene Bozza. The Skip Garibaldi Saxophone Quartet features Reagan Freshman Nick Koutras, Jamal Hawkins, and Josh Milford-Rosales, and Sophomore Robin Anderson. Skip Garibaldi’s program included “Sinfonia No. 3” by J.C.
