Eight NESA Students WIn $30,500 in Las Casas Scholarships

The Las Casas Foundation held its sixth annual Finalist Performance for its "High School Scholarship for Excellence in the Performing Arts" program on Sunday, May 18th. The performance was held at the Charlene McCombs Empire Theater. Six of the finalists were North East School of the Arts Musical Theater and Dance majors.

Additionally, this year marks the first time the Las Casas Foundation hosted a regional competition for the National High School Musical Theater Awards - also known as the Jimmy Awards. The National High School Musical Theater Awards, founded and produced by Nederlander Presentations, Inc. and Pittsburgh CLO, is a national celebration of outstanding student achievement that recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performances by high school students. Students considered for the award must have played the lead role in a high school musical production during the 2013-2014 school year.

We're proud to announce that NESA students received $30,500 in scholarships.The awards to NESA students are as follows:

SOLO VOICE:
1st Place: Maddi Chancey ($5,000)
3rd Place: Aaron Taylor ($3,000)

DANCE:
1st Place: Ashley Olson ($5,000)
2nd Place: Ashton Schifani ($4,000)
3rd Place: Madelene Hall ($3,000)

MONOLOGUE:
4th Place: Anna Connelly ($2,000)

ESSAY AWARD
Chloe Leos ($1500)

Aaron Taylor (for Seaweed in "Hairspray")

Aria and Aaron each received a $4000 scholarship
to help them attend the National High School Musical
Theater Awards in NYC this summer.

Established in 1997 the North East School of the Arts is a magnet program located on the campus of Robert E. Lee High School.  Offering intensive training for gifted and talented students in the arts, NESA offers majors in Cinema, Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Tech Theatre, and Visual Arts.
