Over Memorial Day weekend, select members of the Winston Churchill HS band program performed at the Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest held in Austin. These students were only able to advance to the statewide competition after receiving a Superior rating on a memorized solo at the Regional Solo-Ensemble Contest.
Two percussionists, Nathan Berkowitz and Kevin Zetina, were each honored as an Outstanding Performer at the State Contest. Richard Floyd, State Director of Music, writes “Of the approximately 90,000 students participating in the regional UIL music contests and the 24,000 musicians who performed at TSSEC, only 252 students earned the distinguished honor of being recognized as an Outstanding Performer. This achievement is truly a mark of musical excellence!” They each received a medal identical to those awarded to state champions in all UIL events.
Both Nathan and Kevin performed works for solo marimba at the State Solo-Ensemble Contest. Nathan played the first movement from Two Mexican Dances by Gordon Stout and Kevin performed Michi by Keiko Abe. In addition to their exceptional skills on the marimba, they are also very well-rounded percussionists. Both are currently in the marching band drumline. Nathan is the section leader and plays tenors, while Kevin plays bass drum. Congratulations!
