Lesson Title:  Fractions

Software Applications:  Internet sites, PowerPoint

Directions:

Below are 3 different websites in which the students can explore and learn more about fractions.

Begin by creating a  hot list for your students to use. Click here for directions on creating a hot list.

Note: Holists are a more efficient use of instructional time. Please avoid having students type in web addresses. Having students' type in web addresses increase the risk that a student will access an inappropriate website. Many common misspellings of website addresses are often purchased and set up as websites that would be entirely inappropriate for our students to access. We advise that students access websites either through holists or bookmarked lists.

Fraction Bars
Fraction Bars is a site that allows the students to compare fractions and easily change the fractions to decimals. When you first view the site you will want to start with Instructions on how to use the Applet. This will explain how to use the buttons that are located in the panel. After you are comfortable with the buttons, you can click on Start the Fraction Bars Applet to begin playing. You might want to create a worksheet to help guide the students through the page.

Fraction Pointer
Fraction Pointer is an activity in which the students are given two fractions. They first have to create the fraction they are given by adding rows and columns to a given box. They then click in the smaller sections that they have created, which colors in the section, to show the actual fraction. Once they think they have the correct answer they click "Check". If it is correct they go to the next box and create the appropriate fraction. If it is not, they have to make corrections. Once they have both fractions correctly made, they have to create a fraction that would be between the other two fractions.

Fraction Sorters
Fraction Sorters is an activity in which the students are given fractions to create and then sort according to their size. The first thing the students want to decide is if they want the fractions to be circles or squares. They click the circle next to the choice that they want. Next they decide how many fractions they would like to create. They can choose between two and four fractions. Next they create the fractions by adding sections for the circles, or rows and columns for the squares. Once they have the appropriate number of sections to match the denominator, they begin filling in each section by clicking inside them. The students click in the appropriate number of sections to match the numerator. When they are finished they can click "check". If they have correctly represented the fraction, they then move on to the next fraction. When all the fractions have been completed, they click on the gray bar and drag and place them in order from smallest to largest in the squares below the fractions. After they have them in the order they think is correct they click on the "Check" next to where you chose circles or squares. If the students are incorrect, they make their changes and check it again. If they are correct, they can click on "New" and start over.

The Fraction Comparison PowerPoint is an activity for the students to show what they know about comparing fractions.  Students need to save this PowerPoint to their directory and then work on it from there.  Teachers need to first open it and add questions to slide 8 that are relevant to what they are doing in their classroom.  Once the questions are added, teachers need to save the PowerPoint to the student shared directory in order for students to access the information.
