1st Grade Math

The lessons below are designed to help you address sorting money and shapes as well as identifying fractions.

Copy files from the student shared directory to personal directory by copying the icon or using the Save As feature within the program.

Use My Computer to navigate to available drives.
1.6A Describe and identify objects in order to sort them according to a given attribute using informal language.

Open an existing presentation on the student-shared directory.
1.13A Reason and support his and her thinking using objects, words, pictures, numbers and technology.

Use a teacher created template to complete an activity.

Lesson Titles:  Fractions and Sorting Money

Software Application:  PowerPoint

Directions:

Fractions

1. Open the Fractions lesson from the student drive.

2. Have the students type their name of Slide 1.

3. On slides 2 and 3 have the students click next to the asterisks and type in the correct number.

4. On slides 4, 5, and 6 students click on the shapes and use the Paint Bucket on the Drawing toolbar to color the shapes to create the fraction listed. (To access the Drawing Toolbar, click on View-Toolbars-Drawing.)

5. On slides 7, 8, and 9 use the AutoShapes and the Paint Bucket, located on the Drawing toolbar, to create and color shapes required to complete the task.

6. Slides 10, 11, and 12 can be used as an extension.  On these slides students sort shapes, tell why they sorted them they way they did, and tell what fraction of the shapes are in the specified box.

Sorting Money

1. Open the Sorting Money lesson from the student drive.

2. Have the students sort the coins according to the directions on slides 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

3. On slides 7 through 12 have the students drag coins into the bank to show a proper way to represent the stated amount of money.

4. Slides 13 and 14 allow you to create different money totals for your students to represent. (If you want more slides you can copy slides 13 or 14.)
