Lesson Title:  Celebrate Freedom!

Software Application(s):  Power Point

Directions:

Before the computer lab activity:  You can supplement your holiday unit by downloading* any (or both) of these videos from the KLRN/Unitedstreaming site on our intranet.   Each teacher on the grade level does not need to separately download; just one of you can and place them in your staff shared Kinder folder on the server, then you can all play them on your televisions from your multimedia computers. (Make sure you all have accounts with KLRN and have downloaded Windows Media Player 9 before trying to watch them on your tv!)   Just search by keyword for the following titles:

Old Glory (our flag and patriotism; 11 minutes)

America the Beautiful (no words; about 5 minutes--a scenic look at Washington, symbols, and a parade)

Lab activity:  (This may take more than one trip to the lab for Kinder students.) You may want to demonstrate this lesson in your classroom on your multimedia computer before your lab time so the students can become more familiar with how and what to fill in for the way they celebrate these patriotic holidays.  This helps tremendously to avoid the little "What-do-I-click-now?" hands in the lab!

After your ten-minute warm-up on KidKeys, your  students can do the "Celebrate Freedom"  Power Point.  This is a Power Point created last year for the end of our first newsletter year. On the Title Slide, have them click on the box that says "By:", and put their name there. On the next three slides, have students put the "Date" of the holiday, and then click the "celebrate" box and type a few words about what they would do. To show the slide show, press F5. Click the mouse to advance the slides. Each slide has a link to patriotic music and a "make-your-own-fireworks" show!  You will want to make sure their speakers work, and have their headphones ready!! (Look at the Power Point yourself first so you can see how all the links work, and if you will need to modify up or down to your class's level.)  Right-click this link below, choose "Save Target As.." and place it in your Student Shared Folder.

Internet Explorer: There will be three letters to the left of the title of the video:  "s,", "d," and "a." Right-click the mouse and hold over download button (the little "d), then select "Save Target As."  You will be prompted to save the media file. Choose the location you want the video to be stored on your system (your Desktop is the most common place).
