Lesson Title:  Adding and Subtracting Numbers:  Working with Money

Software Applications:  PowerPoint

Directions:

The Adding and Subtracting Numbers PowerPoint can be used in a number of ways.

First, use it in your classroom to show the entire class how to manipulate the objects. Go over each problem and have the class create unique problems together, with the teacher moving the objects around and typing in the answers.

When the students are familiar with the slides, the teacher can then have students participate by taking turns at the teacher computer. Then, individual students can create unique problems for the class to solve.

Students using the template:

  1. Right click on Adding and Subtracting Numbers PowerPoint. Select Save Target As.
  2. Save the PowerPoint into the kinder folder on the Student Shared drive. (To protect the template: right click and mark it as Read Only)
  3. Students will open the PowerPoint lesson from the Student Shared directory and save it into their personal directory.

Slide 1: Students type in their name.

Slide 2: Example addition slide: Move objects from above the line to the number they represent below the line. Then move the number that represents the answer, from the answer box below. Type in the number after the word answer.

Slide 3: Example subtraction slide: Have students pull down the objects to represent the problem from the top. After the minus sign, pull the subtracted number into the box from the total on the left. Write the answer after the question mark after counting how many are left.

Slide 4: Addition practice. Same as Slide 2.

Slide 5: Subtraction practice. Same as Slide 3.

Slide 6 and 7: Make your own problem. Students can create their own word problem and let another child answer it.

Kinder Money PowerPoint (continuing thread)

Save the template in the same way as you did the Adding and Subtracting Numbers PowerPoint above.

This power point may be used in the classroom or the computer lab. The students identify coins and sort them according to the type of coin. They can then identify simple amounts of money using the coins, by dragging them into the piggy bank.
