Lesson Title:  Conservation: Saving Earth's Resources

Software Application(s):  Kidspiration, Internet

Directions:

Before the computer lab activities:  You can supplement your  "Our Earth" unit by downloading*  any or all of these videos from the KLRN/Unitedstreaming site on our intranet.  Each teacher on the grade level does not need to separately download; just one of you can and place them in your staff shared Second Grade folder on the server, then you can all play them on your televisions from your multimedia computers. (Make sure you all have accounts with KLRN and have downloaded Windows Media Player 9 before trying to watch them on your tv!) Just search by keyword for these titles:

Earth: A First Look  (17 minutes; grade levels 1-3; how water, air and land provide valuable resources.)

Exploring Energy   (16 minutes; grade levels 2-5; may just want to download some key sections.)

Water:  A First Look  (16 minutes; grade levels 1-3;  water as a resource and how it changes.)

Warm-up:  Review the landforms and introduce conservation  by going to the Scott-Foresman activities web site. This activity will only take a couple of  minutes.  Make this a shortcut and put it in your Student Shared drive.

Grade 2 Unit 2 Activity

Here is the Spanish version of the same site:

Kidspiration Activity:  Recycling

After the ten-minute warm-up on KidKeys, the students can do the "Recycling" Kidspiration activity.   This lesson has students select and sort items for recycling. It also includes a text box that revisits the unit question as part of their portfolio assessment about Earth's conservation.  Have students switch to "Writing" view to write their sentences.  Be sure and have students practice changing the font, size, and color of their text.

As this activity  is largely  picture and icon-based, both Spanish and English classes can do it.

In Internet Explorer, right-click this Inspiration template link below and choose "Save target as..."  then place it in your Student Shared folder.  Students will double-click on it, and then go to "File--Save As"  to save it to their Home Directory (usually the "G:" drive.  Then they can change and modify it without altering the template).

Recycle Bins

This lesson correlates with your Social Studies textbook, Unit 2, Lesson 5.

Additional Earth Day Activities:

Directions:  Click on the links, and make shortcuts for them. (In Internet Explorer, grab the little blue "e" to the left of the address and drag it to your desktop). Copy the shortcuts into your second grade folder. (Be sure and click on all the boxes yourself first, so you can see how they work and know what directions you want to give your kids!)  These sites are only in English, however, they are both largely picture-based; with previous instruction either on your television in the classroom, or on the projector in the lab, the students

should be able to navigate easily.

Trash Troopers

Errand Run:  The Alternative Transportation Game

In the Lab:  Have students open their Student Shared Directory and navigate to where you have saved the shortcuts.

In "Trash Troopers," students use a puzzle-like format to clean a landform of garbage.

In "Errand Run," students learn there are alternate forms of transportation in which to do errands.  Environmental quiz questions pop up during the activity; children are scored based on their choices of time and transportation, as well as on their quiz answers.

Internet Explorer: There will be three letters to the left of the title of the video:  "s,", "d," and "a." Right-click the mouse and hold over download button (the little "d), then select "Save Target As."  You will be prompted to save the media file. Choose the location you want the video to be stored on your system (your Desktop is the most common place).
