2nd Grade Math

The lesson below is designed to help you address: Fraction comparisons and identification of parts.

Math TEKS NEISD Technology Standards
2.2A name fractional parts of a whole object (not to exceed twelfths) when given a concrete representation M1 Open an existing presentation on the student-shared directory.
2.7C cut geometric shapes apart and identify the new shapes made M2 Use a teacher created template to complete an activity
2.12A  identify the mathematics in everyday situations M5 Add text to slides
2.12B use a problem-solving model that incorporates understanding the problem, making a plan, carrying out the plan, and evaluating the solution for reasonableness P1 Open a new picture
2.12D use tools such as real objects, manipulatives, and technology to solve problems P3 Use the picture stamps for illustrations
P6 Use the text box tool to write words
Lesson Title:  Fractions

Software Applications:
 PowerPoint

Directions:

For this fraction lesson, students will use a template to familiarize themselves with the fractional parts of a whole.   They will then pair up and work on a problem using Kid Pix 3 to first organize and then to show their thinking and their answers. The activities will take two or three computer lab visits to complete.

  1. Save this PowerPoint template to the student shared directory and have students navigate to that directory and save the template to their own directories before they begin to work.
    1. Slide 1: Title and name of student.
    2. Slide 2-8: Students answer the question at the bottom indicating what part of a figure is or is NOT shaded.
    3. Slide 9: Students answer the question, telling which figure can be divided into four equal parts.  They can draw on top of the figures with the line tool or just figure it out without drawing.
    4. Slide 10: Student Directions slide
    5. Slide 11: The question that pairs of students will be working on to find a solution.
    6. Slide 12: The Teacher solution slide.  Teachers will need to delete this slide before students save it to their directories.
  2. Once students have finished the template on their own, they can be assigned to a partner, and begin to work together to find the solution to the question posed on Slide 11.

The question is this:  Mrs. Brown has a husband and two kids.  She baked a cake that she wanted to divide equally  for the four of them.  Show how many shapes she could bake her cake into, and tell how she would divide each cake into four equal parts.  Then explain why you think this would work.

Students will open the Kid Pix 3 program and type in the question, solve the problem, draw solutions and give their reasoning for their answers.
