Lesson Title:  World Maps & Flags

Software Application(s):  KidPix 3, Internet

Directions:

Before the computer lab activities:  You can supplement your  "Our Country Today" unit by downloading*  this video from the KLRN/Unitedstreaming site on our intranet.
Each teacher on the grade level does not need to separately download; just one of you can and place it in your staff shared Second Grade folder on the server, then you can all play them on your televisions from your multimedia computers. (Make sure you all have accounts with KLRN and have downloaded Windows Media Player 9 before trying to watch them on your tv!)

Search by keyword for this title:  Understanding and Using Maps and Globes:
(41 minutes; grade levels 2-5; video quiz halfway through and at end.  A few questions may be too hard for second grade, but the overall content is good.)

Week 1:

Warm-up:  Review the three branches of government from lesson 4 by going to the Scott-Foresman activities web site. It will only take a few minutes.  Make this a shortcut and put it in your Student Shared drive.

English:  Grade 2 Unit 4 Activity

Spanish:  Grado 2 Unidad 4 Actividad

Then, after placing this shortcut in your Second Grade Shared Folder, have students click on Infoplease Atlas (sorry, it's only in English).

Have students click on various continents and countries.  Use the "Back" and "Forward" buttons to go back and forth between the main atlas and the various countries.  Tell them to be thinking about which countries they will want to focus on next week when they look up the flags.

Week 2:

Kid Pix Activity:  World Maps

Demonstrate this lesson in your classroom on your multimedia computer before your lab time so the students can become more familiar with the tools and menus.  This helps tremendously to avoid the little "What-do-I-click-now?" hands in the lab! (Also, be sure to teach the "Undo Guy" tool and the Eraser tool, in case they want to change what they just did.)

After the ten-minute warm-up on KidKeys, the students can do "Kid Pix World Maps." As this is a teacher-directed, open-ended lesson, it can be done in English or Spanish. This lesson has students pull up the background of the world map, and choose flags from various countries and label them. Since Kid Pix 3 is so picture and icon-based, both Spanish and English classes can do it.

For complete, step-by-step instructions with pictures and where to find the right stickers, etc., open and print this Word document. Do the lesson yourself first so you can see how you will need to modify up or down to your class's level. Extensions and modifications for varying learning levels are included.

Internet Explorer: There will be three letters to the left of the title of the video:  "s,", "d," and "a." Right-click the mouse and hold over download button (the little "d), then select "Save Target As."  You will be prompted to save the media file. Choose the location you want the video to be stored on your system (your Desktop is the most common place).
