Lesson Title:  Identifying pictures of items matching circles, triangles, and rectangles.

Software Application(s):  Inspiration, Kidspiration, and KidPix 3.

Directions:

These Inspiration (Kidspiration) and KidPix 3 activities should take two to three visits to the lab to complete.

  1. Save the first Inspiration template  (or Kidspiration template) to the student shared directory.  Students will then go to that directory, and save the template to their own directories before working on the activity.
Click here for more detailed directions for student saving. They can do this by finding it in the student directory, and copying the icon before it is opened up, and pasting it into their own directory.

  2. Students will open the activity and click and drag each picture of the item into the shape (circle, triangle, and rectangle) where it belongs.  Students can then stand and describe the picture they placed in a shape and explain why it would be placed there.    (Note: The students are matching the pictures of items and not the actual item.  I.E. a basketball is a sphere, but the picture of a basketball is a circle.)

  3. When complete, students can save their work, and print it out.

Extension:

  1. There is a second Inspiration template that can be used as an extension. This addresses additional kindergarten shapes (oval, trapezoid, hexagon).

  2. Once the students have become familiar with the different shapes and matching them, they can work with a partner to design their own page with things that they either draw or stamp into the different shapes using KidPix3.  Students create three different pages, one with each shape and work together to find things that match those shapes or they can put two or even three shapes on one page.  Here is an example of what it might look like when they are done.

6. Students present and explain their picture(s) to the class.
