Lesson Title: Measuring, Weighing, and Telling Time

Software Application:  PowerPoint

Directions:
These lessons will help reinforce measurement skills. Using the Measuring and Weighing template, the students will use a paper clip to measure the length and height of different pictures and move pictures to show which object would weigh more. The measuring slides are set up so that the students begin by estimating the height and length of the clipart objects using the paper clip shown on the slide. The students click on the line and type their estimation. Then students click and drag the paper clip to determine the actual length or height. They record their actual answer, and then they can use the boxes in the lower right hand corner to determine the difference between their estimate and the actual length. On slides 9-12, the students drag the pictures of the objects to show which object is heavier than the other. On slides 3 and 11 there is a textbox in which the students can explain how they came up with their answer. (To have the students type their answer, have them click next to the asterisk.) Below is a website that might help to introduce Pan Balances to your students.

The second PowerPoint, Telling Time, has a clock without hands and a box to type the time in. This lesson is set up to go along with any book that deals with time. As you read the story, the students use the Arrow tool in the drawing toolbar to draw the hands on the clock. Then they type the time in the box next to the clock. You will probably want to demonstrate how to draw the hands before you have the students begin. If you need more slides, click on a slide, and then click on Edit and then Duplicate.

Before you go to the computer lab, open the templates, and save them to the Student Shared Directory so that all of your students can access the files.
You will want to make the files read-only so that more than one student can open the document at the same time. Right click on the document, and choose properties. When the box opens, click in the box next to read-only. Click Apply and then click OK.
