Lesson Title: Prove It! (Pre-reading and During Reading Activity) Software Application(s): PowerPoint
Directions: 2. Show the first slide to your class using your multimedia connected to the TV or projector. Show your class the text briefly, allowing them to see any pictures or major headings in the text, but not allowing them to read any portion of the text. 3. Move to slide 2 in the presentation and ask if anyone has a prediction about what the text will be about, or what will be learned from the text. 4. Record a prediction on slide 2. Skip slide 3 and go to slide 4. 5. Ask for another prediction and record it on slide 4. 6. Skip slide 5. Ask for another prediction and record it on slide 6. 7. Save this presentation to your 5th grade folder on the student server. 8. Have the students take the text to be read with them to the lab. In the lab, have the students access the PowerPoint presentation from the student server. 9. Have the students type their name on the first slide after the title of the text. 10. Have the students read the text with the purpose of either proving or disproving the class predictions. When proof is found to prove or disprove a prediction, the student finds which slide the prediction was recorded on, goes to the following slide and records whether the prediction was true or not true. They then record proof of their decision from the text. (You can have them notate page numbers or paragraph numbers from the text if you wish.) If the conclusion was inferred, the student must record clues from the text that led them to conclude either true or not true. 11. When students are finished, have them change the background and add clipart to embellish the story. 10. Once the students have proven/disproven each prediction, have them print by selecting FILE, PRINT. Under Print What on the Print menu screen: choose HANDOUTS.
