Lesson Title:  Everyone Read To . . . (ERT) (During Reading Activity) & Vocabulary Map (After Reading Activity)

Software Application(s):  PowerPoint (Teacher instruction) and Inspiration (Student product)

Directions:
"ERT is a format used to guide children through text, a page or two at a time, and to help them understand the important information on each page. This format can be used with a small group or with the whole class. Even children who struggle with reading can often read better if they have something specific for which to read. Their success motivates them to continue to try." (Guided Reading the Four-Blocks Way, p. 173)

With the Reading Test right around the corner, this will be a valuable comprehension strategy to use with your students.

1. Choose text that students will need page by page guidance to comprehend.

2. Lead the children through the text a page at a time asking FIND OUT (literal) questions and FIGURE OUT (inferential) questions using the PowerPoint template. (English template) (Spanish Template)

3. Have the children raise their hand when they find the answer, and continue reading to the end of the page. (If you ask two questions, make sure to tell the students it is a TWO HANDER question. With these questions, students raise 1 hand when they find out the first question, and raise the other hand when they find out the second question.)

4. When most hands are up, ask someone to give the answer.

5. Choose a different student to explain where the answer was found.

6. After walking through the text using ERT, have the students choose a word from the text that they understand better after reading the text with guidance.

7. In the lab, have the students open Inspiration, go to FILE, and choose TEMPLATE.

8. In the template menu, have them choose Language Arts-Vocabulary.

9. Using the word from the story they have chosen, have them fill in the Graphic Organizer, adding additional symbols and/or pictures if necessary. (See example below!)
