Lesson Title:  Pre-Reading - Sensory Map

Software Application(s):  Kidspiration

Directions:

(Before doing this activity in the lab, share this activity with your students in the classroom using your multimedia computer which is connected to the TV. )

1. Have students open up Kidspiration, click on the Science button and choose the third picture named Explore with Senses.

2. Have students click on the green guy on the menu bar and add their name.

3. Students click and highlight on the eye, ear, hand, etc., then click on a picture in the symbol palette to describe the scene pictured. The picture that they choose will replace the current picture. (The students can use the blue arrows to move between symbol categories.)

4. After they have a picture in place for each of the five senses, have students click on the lined tablet on the menu bar and complete a sentence for each object in the outline view.  The student may change the font or size.

5. Have students click back to the brainstorming page, when finished,  and print.

As a follow-up activity have students use the printed sensory map to write a story.

Variation:  You may have the students change the center picture to go along with a story you have been reading in class.
