Text Resources: Scott-Foresman, The United States, pp. 399, 401, 408, 409-413; 464-466, 562-567 (same pages in Spanish text also)

1. Have the students work in teams to identify how life was different before the Industrial Revolution and after. Each team will create an Excel chart with two columns showing what was happening before the Industrial Revolution and after the Industrial Revolution.

2. Each student within the team will select and read about an invention created during the late 1700's to early 1800's that they think caused change in the way of life in the United States in the early 1800's. (Many possibilities are mentioned within the text resource pages above.) Each member of the team will create an Excel document with 6 columns: Before the Invention, Invention, Date, Who, Benefit, Problem (In this last column, they will identify at least one problem that may have been caused by this new invention. ) *

3. Save and use the attached Excel Invention spreadsheet to project on the screen for the students; however, students should create the spreadsheet from scratch with your guidance. You may want to give each student a copy of the Invention Style Sheet, so they can check off each of the required elements as they complete it.

4. Have the students enter the column headings, resize the columns' width and height, center align the headings, change the font type and size to Arial 14, and change the style to Bold. Have them highlight all cells (click in upper left corner cell) and go to Format/Cells; click on the Alignment tab, and put a check in Wrap Text; also Horizontal Center, Vertical Bottom. Although they'll be printing in black and white, have them change the font color in the Invention column to Red. Have them change the font color and style for the recent invention to Blue Bold. Then have them write their concluding statement in Green Bold by highlighting that group of cells and selecting Format/Cells; click on Font and choose Color: Green, Font Style: Bold; then click on the Alignment tab and check Merge Cells; then click on the Border tab and click Outline to put a border around the statement box. Have them go to View/Header and Footer, click Custom Header, and type in their Name and Date. Click OK.

5. Below this section of the chart, each student will add in a recent invention that they feel has had a significant impact on our way of life. They'll complete each column for that invention as well.

6. Then, they'll complete this statement at the bottom: After completing this research, I now realize that ...

7. Insert 2 pictures to represent Before and After the Industrial Revolution. (Insert/Picture/Clip Art) They may need to be resized from the corner.

8. To print this chart, the students will go to File/Page Setup and select Landscape, and if the option is available, select Fit to 1 page wide by 1 page tall. Click OK. Then, highlight all of the completed cells, and go to File/Print Area/Set Print Area. (This action tells the computer which cells to print.)

Modifications:
Basic:  Complete the chart for only the one selected invention.
Intermediate:  Discuss with teammates and complete the chart for 2-3 inventions.
Advanced:  Discuss with teammates and complete the chart for all of the inventions selected by team members.

Bilingual classes: Because these activities are open-ended, the students can complete the activities in Spanish or English. The teacher will want to give them headers in Spanish for the Excel document that they are creating.
