Lesson Title:  Families, Communities, and Nations Celebrate

GeneralizationCelebrations help us remember important people and events that have happened in the past.

Software Application(s):  PowerPoint, Excel, & Inspiration

Directions:
We have personal celebrations, community celebrations, state celebrations, and national celebrations.
Text Resources: Scott-Foresman, Communities, pp. 66-71
Internet Resources: Celebrations Hotlist (Save this hotlist to your grade level folder within the student-shared directory so that students can access it. After saving, mark the file as Read Only so that all of your students can access it simultaneously, and they will not be able to make changes to the document. To do this: Go to the student-shared directory, find the file, right-click on it, and select properties; check Read Only. To add to the hotlist, prior to opening the hotlist, right-click on the icon, select Properties, and uncheck Read Only. After making changes, be sure to go back and mark it Read Only again, so that your student will not be able to make changes to the list.)

Save the Celebration PowerPoint slideshow in your grade level folder within the student-shared directory. Begin the unit by showing the slideshow (click F5 or View/Slideshow). You'll notice that this slideshow has no text; it is a concept attainment slideshow. To activate prior knowledge, have the students view the slideshow and give each slide an appropriate title and make predictions about the unit of study.

As a warm-up activity, the students can complete the activity from the Scott-Foresman website:
Grade 3 Celebration Activity in English

Grade 3 Celebration Activity in Spanish

Divide the class into small groups: city, state, and nation to jigsaw the study of celebrations.
Each student will interview their own family to identify personal family celebrations.
Then, each group will research to identify celebrations for their area of study. They will complete the We Celebrate Excel spreadsheet by adding in the information that they have discovered (celebration event, date). (They may use their text, the Celebration Hotlist, and other reference material, as needed.) Each group will present their discoveries to the class, so that everyone can add new information to their Excel spreadsheet in the appropriate columns.

Once the list has been completed within the Excel spreadsheet, the students will open the Celebrations Inspiration template and add text, symbols, and pictures within the appropriate rings to indicate various celebrations by family, city, state, and nation. In the center ring, they will change the word Me to their own name and birthday, and add in personal family celebrations. Have them change the words FAMILY, CITY, STATE, and NATION to their own last name, San Antonio, Texas, and United States. Besides using the pictures that are within the Inspiration symbol palette, they can find pictures from the Internet, save them to their directory, and then, within Inspiration, right-click and choose Insert Graphic, navigate to their own directory, and double click on the photo. They may need to resize the photo from the corner and drag it to the appropriate ring. (If they use pictures found on the Internet, be sure that they copy and paste the URL under the photo to give credit to its source. )

Bilingual Modifications: Because these activities are open-ended, the students may respond in Spanish. The teacher may want to use the Spanish version of the PowerPoint, the Excel spreadsheet and the Inspiration product as well.
