Directions: Graphs & Charts Template
(Excel)

The first lesson has the students using data about where they go after school and a template to create a graph in Excel. As an extension the students can take new data and create a graph from scratch.

Before you go to the computer lab, open the Excel template, and save it to the Student Shared Directory so that all of your students can access the file. You also want to make the file read-only so that more than one student can access the document at the same time. Right click on the document, and choose properties. When the box opens, click in the box next to read-only. Click Apply and then click OK.

Have the students open their excel template. Discuss the different ways that the students leave school. Take a survey to determine how the students leave school. Have the students fill in the chart according to the data that you collected. Data in the graph will automatically appear when the students enter data in a cell. Once the students have finished their graph, have them click on the tab labeled Questions, and have them answer the questions using the graph that they have created. The students will have to toggle back and forth between the graph and the questions.

Extension (Graphing Handout)
As an extension, you can use the handout link provided below to have the students create their own graph using any other data that they have collected.
