Social Studies: "Early Travelers to America" & "Use a History Map"
Sentence Building with Predictable Charts in PowerPoint

Directions:
Prior to having your students do this technology lesson based upon the information on pages 196-201 in the 1st grade Scott-Foresman Social Studies text book, As a class, complete the predictable sentences on a chart and with sentence strips with your students. This lesson is to be used during the sentence builder part of Predictable Charts.

(Directions on using these templates are also found under each slide in the Notes box and on Slides 8-10.

  1. From Internet Explorer, right click here on Predictable Chart:  Early America (PowerPoint). Select 'Save Target As' and save wherever you would like to store this PowerPoint template (My Documents, your personal drive/directory, or on your desktop). It is designed to be used in Normal View, rather than as a slideshow while the students are working with it.

  2. Fill in the name of the child and their ending for the predictable sentence in the box marked ?xxxx?.

  3. To add additional slides: Insert/ Duplicate slide as many times as needed.

  4. Save it to the student server. The students can open the presentation, find their name, click on that slide, and then build their sentence. They can then try to build others? sentences.

  5. Students can insert appropriate clip art or print out their slide and illustrate it.  All the slides can be compiled and bound into a class book.

VARIATION:  If your students are ready to write their own responses, save only slides 1-4, have them open slides 1-2 and drag the labels to their places. Then, have them type in the class name on slide 3. Next, they?ll click on slide 4, type in their own endings and name, then build their sentence, and either insert a picture from Clip Art, or illustrate their slide after printing. Each student will print slide 4, and you can compile them to create a class book.
Also it?s fun to print out the slideshow as Handouts with 4 or 6 slides per page. Then fold each page vertically down the middle, backside to backside. Then cut into 2 or 3 strips, and put together as a mini-book for each student.
