| Directions:
There are two
different lessons that you can work through with your students. Lesson one
uses a PowerPoint template to review money, place value, and odd and even
numbers. The second lesson uses an Excel template to
practice counting by twos, fives, and tens.
Before you go to the
computer lab, open the templates, and save them to the Student Shared
Directory so that all of your students can access the files. You will also want to make
the files read-only so that more than one student can open the document at the same
time. Right click on the document, and choose properties. When the box opens,
click in the box next to read-only. Click Apply and then click OK.
Numbers and Money Template (PowerPoint )
In this activity students
manipulate the PowerPoint by dragging objects and drawing lines between objects.
If you are using Netscape you will want to Save the file to the Student
Shared Directory when prompted. In
Internet Explorer, the PowerPoint will open in presentation mode. You will want
to right click on the first slide and choose Save Target As. Save the lesson to
the Student Shared Directory, and then
open it to preview the lesson. Before you use it with the students, be sure to
follow the steps listed above so that all the students are able to access the
template.
Slide 1: The students drag coins and their values into the column that matches
their name.
Slide 2: Students order the money according to their values.
Slide 3: Students draw lines connecting Values of coins with the correct picture
and the name of the coin. The
students will use the line tool from the drawing toolbar. (To see the drawing
toolbar, click on view - toolbars -
and
make sure that the Drawing Toolbar is checked.) On the drawing toolbar click the line tool and
then click
on the first object that you want to connect, and holding the mouse button down,
draw your line
to the
second object.
Slide 4: Students order numbers from greatest to least.
Slide 5: Students order numbers from least to greatest.
Slide 6: Students sort numbers according to whether they are odd or even.
Counting by twos, fives, and tens: Hundreds Charts (Excel)
Once the students have the template open, make sure that they have
the drawing toolbar opened. (To do this click on view - toolbars - and make sure
that the Drawing Toolbar is checked.) Before you begin click on the paint
bucket in the drawing toolbar and choose a color other than black. (To choose a
different color click on the down arrow next to the paint bucket. You can use
the Standard Colors or you can click on More Fill Colors to view
even more choices.) Demonstrate
how to skip count by twos. To do this click on the cell with the number 2 in it, and then
click on the paint bucket in the drawing toolbar. Then click on the cell with 4
in it and click on the paint bucket. Continue to demonstrate this till you are
comfortable that the students understand what they are supposed to do. Once they
are finished counting by twos they can click on the next sheet at the bottom of
the page and skip count by
fives or tens.
