Second Grade
Second grade is a year in which children grow by leaps and bounds, both
physically and academically. Young, emergent readers and mathematicians
begin to read and explore numbers for their own pleasure and also to expand
their knowledge level and interest base.
Second graders at Encino Park are involved in a wide variety of academic,
creative, and social experiences which encourages and supports this growth.
They learn how to work as part of a team where each individual is responsible
for his/her own actions and learning, as well as supporting that of their
peers. Each student is given the opportunity to learn in a variety
of ways and at his/her own pace.

Second Grade Curriculum
Math
Our Math program, as is all our curriculum, is designed to support the
TEKS, and provide for many hands-on activities to foster a true understanding
of number concepts and patterns, addition and subtraction, geometry, statistics,
measurement, and introduce the basic ideas behind multiplication and division.
Reading, Writing, and Language Arts
Our Reading, Writing, and Language Arts program is based on the most
recent research available on how children learn. We utilize the Four
Block Reading Model. These areas are taught through the use of a
variety of literary genres and skill instruction. Students are encouraged
to share their understanding and reaction to the material in both oral
and written expression. Phonics is a strong part of our program
as this is the key to decoding unfamiliar words.

Social Studies, Science, and Health
Our Social Studies, Science,
and Health curriculum are guided by the TEKS. Whenever possible,
we enrich these areas with guest speakers or field trips.
Our Science instruction is
a combination of hands on interactive activities and grade level appropriate
reading materials.
Social Studies lessons are
designed to help our students become caring, informed citizens of their
communities. We enrich our Social Studies curriculum by using several Core
Knowledge Units. These units include: Ancient Greece, Ancient China, Westward
Expansion, and the Constitution.
Through Health lessons, students
are encouraged to work and play safely, be physically fit, and aware of
the dangers of drugs. The Second Step program helps children acquire
the skills needed to get along with their peers and do better in school.
