EDUCATIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER - I BASIC
SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
FEDERAL/GRANT FUNDED
STAFFING OF THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON THE AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Minimum of nine (9) hours college courses in Interpreter Training Program Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Paraprofessional Certification as required by the State Board and the District
  • Texas Commission for the Deaf interpreter Certification (BEI) Level l or Level II Prior to June 2007 or Registry of Interpreters (RID) Entry Level or equivalent to BEI Basic after June 2007
  • Valid Texas Drivers License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District
MAJOR PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of the Code of Ethics (Texas Board of Evaluators-BEI or Registry of Interpreters-RID) and how it is adapted for an educational setting
  • Interprets classroom, administrative and social interactions required by the student using entry level, daily conversational vocabulary for deaf/hard-of-hearing students and staff
  • Provides basic expressive to intermediate level sign interpreting and sign to voice interpreting which may include a form of Signed English, American Sign Language and/or oral interpreting
  • Prepares and utilizes the sign vocabulary specific to each class under guidance of Lead Interpreter and Auditorily Impaired Coordinator by previewing class materials, i.e., worksheets, videotapes, content vocabulary
  • Uses the appropriate sign system for each student as designated by the Auditorily Impaired Coordinator (AIC) and Admission, Review, Dismissal Committee (ARD)
  • Continuously models correct interaction between interpreters and student
  • Reports directly to the Principal, lead Interpreter and Auditorily Impaired Program Coordinator
  • Assists the Auditorily Impaired (AI) staff in providing orientations to deafness for regular education staff and hearing student when assigned
  • Attends staff meetings for the Auditorily Impaired Program
  • Performs additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned

$16.09-$19.38 PAY GRADE: I5 WORK DAYS: 179
