Writing by Children

"If a teacher is aware of childrens' developmental spelling progress it will enable her to respond intelligently when working with students."

Stage 1 - The Precommunicative or Pre-phonemic Stage- consists of scribbles and random letters.

Stage 2 - The Semiphonetic Stage- words begin to be represented by a letter or two.  The letters they write usually are the first and last letters they hear in a word.

Stage 3 - The Phonetic Stage- Vowels appear but it is not always the right one.

Stage 4 - The Transitional Stage- Each sound is represented

Stage 5 - Correct Spelling- No misspelled words. (Few Kindergarteners reach this stage.)

After your children have seen you write the morning message and have shared the pen while producing predictable charts you will find that most of your students are ready to write by themselves.
