Choosing a
big book for shared reading:
1. The
book must be very predictable, with repetitive sentence patterns, pictures
to support those sentence patterns, and not too much print.
2. The book should be enjoyable and appealing to most of the children
in the class, since the entire class will work with the same big book.
3. The book must be able to "take students someplace"
conceptually. Most teachers spend a week or two with a book--reading,
rereading, acting out the story, and building connections to themes and
units to extend the children's knowledge.
