Reading by Children

Reading by children is multilevel.  When kinder students read by themselves some of them "picture read", while others will "pretend" to read, and the children that can "really read" will have an opportunity to do so too.

We teach our Kindergarten students that there are three types of reading:

You can read by reading all the words.

You can "pretend read" by telling the story.

You can "picture read" by looking at the pictures in the book and talking about the things you see.

Ways to Encourage your Children to Read

Reading in Centers can be encouraged all year.  There are two things to remember when setting up a reading center... a comfortable place to read and a lot of good books from which they can choose.

Reading the Room Center can be encouraged all year too.  Here the children use a magic wand or a special pointer to go around and "read" the words in the room.  An extension of this center can be to Write Around the Room.  Here they carry a clipboard and pencil and write words that they know around the room.

Self-Selected Reading should be encouraged later in the year.  The books used earlier in the Reading center can be pulled and placed in book baskets on the student tables.  This cuts down on movement in the classroom during this time.  When you are ready, have the children read softly to themselves for about 5 minutes to begin with and work up to 15 minutes by the end of the year.  The teacher during this time roams around the room and listens and coaches a child who might need some extra help.

Take-Home Reading should be encouraged later in the year when the children can read independently.  The expectation is that parents will read to and with their children nightly.  A take-home reading program provides books to parents and their children who do not have books in their homes.
