NAMES
Please label everything you send to school.  This includes lunchboxes and any clothing they may take off at school.

SUPPLIES
New supplies will have to be purchased periodically.  This is especially true of crayons, pencils, glue, and folders.  We prefer Fiskars scissors, Elmer's glue, and folders with bottom pockets.

FOLDERS
The folder with both the discipline report and homework should be brought to and from school daily.  Please look through it and clean it out every day.  Forms should be sent back as soon as possible.

HOMEWORK
We require approximately 30 minutes of homework a day, Monday through Thursday.  This will include math and language arts.  This should be returned the very next day.  In November we will be sending home readers to be read to you during homework time.  In addition to the homework we send, we encourage you to continue to read to your child every day.  Please send a note with the nightly reader saying your child has read the book.

SUPPLIES FOR HOMEWORK
Crayons, scissors, and glue will sometimes be necessary for the homework assignments.  This should be available at home since the school supplies will not be sent home for this purpose.

GRADING AND REPORTING
The first grade report card is a checklist.  It will start coming home the 2nd nine weeks.  Conferences will be held as our first report.  On papers done by the child, we will sometimes use happy faces, + and X.  At times no grade will be indicated if the paper is a practice or done together in class.

LIBRARY DAY
We go to library once a week and with permission from the teacher.

MEDICATION
ALL medication must be left in the nurse's office with a note from you about dispensing.  No child may keep medication in the classroom.

MAKE-UP WORK
Missed classwork and homework will be saved for your child to do at home, after returning to school.  Since much of what we do in first grade is active and visual and auditory, it is impossible to send home everything the child has missed.  It is imperative that the children attend school every day, if they are not ill, in order to gain full benefit of this vital year.

BOOK CLUBS
Low-cost books may be ordered several times a year.  Please make all checks payable to the Scholastic Book Company.  This is an optional activity.

SPELLING
Spelling will be starting in October.  Five words will come home each first day of the week and will be tested on the last day of the week.  Lower case letters will be used.  We use these words to teach not only spelling but handwriting, phonic, and reading.

JUNK
Please watch the FIRST GRADE NEWS that comes home on Mondays for things we need you to save for our projects. Thanks!

DRESS CODE
Please refer to the NEISD Student/Parent Handbook for rules concerning proper dress for school.  Please wear shirt tails in.

BIRTHDAY INVITATIONS
Please mail any birthday invitations unless there is one for each child in the class.  This is a school policy.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
If you want to help with school functions in any way such as field trips, parties, or volunteering at the school, please check with the office to get the DPS forms to fill out NOW.  Please join the PTA for only $4.50.  We do!

SELF-MANAGER/LOVE AND LOGIC

How I Run My Love and Logic Classroom

I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.

Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for anyone else.

If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.

If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.

What I do, will depend on the special person, and the special situation.

If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, "I'm not sure that's fair," and we will talk.

SPECIAL NOTE
The first grade teachers work together on ideas and share many materials.  We are alike in many ways, but we do things in different ways and may be on a different timetable from other classes.  Your child may or may not do the same projects and assignments as children in another class.  Thank you for all of your cooperation and support!
