REVISED
Supply List - Calculator Purchasing Information
NEISD provides
classroom sets of calculators available to all students for use during math and
science classes.
However, if students own
their own calculators, the calculator can provide additional help on homework
outside of class, particularly in mathematics.
If you are choosing to purchase a calculator, please base that decision
on the mathematics course that your student is currently enrolled in or will
plan to take.
NEISD has selected to use Texas
Instruments (TI) calculators in math and science classrooms for classroom sets
that students use during the school day.
If your student is taking 6th,
7th or 8th grade math, your student would benefit from
the use of a scientific calculator. The scientific
calculator that the campuses use is the TI-30X IIS if you wish to
purchase a compatible calculator. For
any math course beyond 8th grade math, a graphing
calculator is an essential tool for learning. Students could use a graphing calculator in
their middle school math courses; however, the current 6th – 8th
grade Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) exams do not allow
students to use any calculator when taking the assessments.
There are currently TI-83,
TI-83+, and TI-84+ graphing calculators available in the
classroom sets. The most recent model
that is available for purchase is the TI-84+; however, the TI-83
and TI-84 still meet the needs if one is available. If your
student is taking or plans to take Calculus AP or Statistics AP in the future,
then the TI-89 model would be the calculator to consider. All of the Texas Instruments calculators
listed above, except the TI-89, are
approved for use on the 9th – 11th grade math and science
Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) exams. The TI-89
is the most powerful graphing calculator allowed for use on the AP
Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, PSAT/NMSQT, SAT® I, and SAT
II exams.
