DRISCOLL MIDDLE SCHOOL

PRE-AP & AP PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

& COURSE AGREEMENT

2006-2007

 INFORMATION:

Pre-AP and AP courses challenge and enrich motivated college-bound students to expand their education beyond the regular program.  Pre-AP coursework develops advanced skills and content background to prepare students for the college-level work of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and for the Advanced Placement exams.  Gifted and Talented Programs (GT), requiring specified admission, incorporate the Pre-AP and AP strategies and curriculum as well.  At the high school level these rigorous courses carry weighted credit toward computation of class rank, previously called honors credit. However, all of these courses have strategies/curriculum that are markedly different from courses formerly labeled honors.

Driscoll’s Pre-AP program is committed to the principle that all students deserve an opportunity to participate in rigorous and academically challenging courses.

Students in these rigorous programs are expected to:

  • Analyze, synthesize, and manipulate knowledge and skills
  • Think critically
  • Develop successful study skills
  • Budget time effectively and efficiently
  • Commit to a daily academic action
  • Engage in electronically-assisted research and/or communications
  • Extend advanced content area vocabulary
  • Utilize community, university, and industry as resources when applicable
  • Maintain subject-specific portfolios/notebooks when applicable.
  • Commit to this agreement supporting the Pre-AP/AP program and expectations

For Pre-AP 8th grade science, students will be expected to:

  • Complete a competition level science project (i.e.- science fair)
  • Use higher level math skills

Success requires commitment from all students, parents, and teachers involved in this program.

TEACHER:  The teacher agrees to conduct the Pre-AP course with enrichment strategies and at a pace appropriate to the grade level.  Students and parents will be notified, in a timely fashion, if student work and/or assessments are unsatisfactory.

PARENT:  I agree to be familiar with the above Pre-AP course requirements and to help my son/daughter organize study time in support of class assignments.  I will notify the teacher immediately of any concern I have relating to the class or my child’s progress. I have read the course description and agree to the requirements of the class.

STUDENT:  The student agrees to organize his/her time and effort to successfully complete this course.  By signing below, the student understands this course agreement and commits to participate in this rigorous course.
