STEP PROCESS
The Driscoll Step Process can be a very effective way to manage student behavior in the classroom. The process begins with firmly established expectations for student behavior that are to be posted in every classroom.
If a student chooses not to abide by said expectations, they will be given a Ready To Learn Slip. The Ready To Learn Slip contains student information, team information, and the infraction the student has committed. If the student commits an infraction that is not listed on the slip, there is a place for "other," at which point any inappropriate behavior can be listed. Once the Ready To Learn Slip is filled out and signed, it will be given back to the teacher who initiated the consequence. The teacher will then give the slip to the student’s advisory teacher, who will write the infraction and date in the appropriate box on the Driscoll Middle School Team Referral Form. The Team Referral Form is a form in triplicate for distribution one each to student file, parents, and primary copy returned to the academic team. The sequence of consequences is listed on the Driscoll Step Plan.
Once the step plan has been initiated, the following needs to take place.
1st slip Verbal warning
2nd slip Teacher/Student conference
3rd slip Parent phone call or e-mail that is verified
4th slip Team issued detention
5th slip Counselor referral
6th slip Team/Parent/Student face-to-face conference
7th slip Office referral
8th/9th slip Team/Parent contact (a new Referral Form is started)
9th/10th slip 2nd Team referral
Any student that does not accumulate more than 5 slips at the end of 1st semester will start over at 2nd semester. Also, keep in mind that this is only for "minor" infractions such as those listed on the ready to learn slip.

TARDY POLICY
A student is considered tardy to class whenever they are not present at the scheduled time that class is to begin. Exceptions to this would be if a student has a pass from a teacher, the office, or another staff member.
If a student is deemed tardy to class, a "tardy slip" is issued (see attached) and the student will fill in the appropriate information, including their signature. They will then return the slip to the teacher issuing the tardy. The teacher puts the tardy slip in (the ISS teacher’s) mailbox. The ISS teacher monitors and logs all tardies for each individual student.
When the ISS teacher receives a student’s first tardy slip, she builds a folder for the student. Any subsequent tardy slips are placed in the folder and the date is written on the front of the folder. Once a student receives 3 tardy slips (this is cumulative, not teacher specific) the ISS teacher will email the parent to let them know that on the 4th tardy the student will be referred to their administrator. The tardy is monitored and updated through the end of the semester. At the beginning of the second semester, all students begin with a clean record.
