About DATA

     The Design and Technology Academy is located on the campus of the newly renovated Theodore Roosevelt High School. Students from NEISD as well as students from outside the district may apply for admission and are accepted based on a lottery system. The DATA curriculum is college preparatory. Students are encouraged to take rigorous courses in academic disciplines in addition to DATA electives.

     A DATA graduate will be an independent thinker and learner who works creatively and confidently as a community member to design solutions for tomorrow.

DATA Graduate Requirements

DATA students must complete special requirements in addition to the standard graduation requirements to graduate from DATA but they also have special opportunities to obtain the required credits. For the full list click here.

Social Studies: 3 1/2 credits required World Geography, World History, U. S. History, Government.
(World Geography and World History will be integrated in DATA 9th and 10th grade World Studies classes. If the student is in GT English classes, these two credits must be worked separately into his/her schedule)
English:4 credits required English I, II, III, IV
PE: 1 1/2 credits required
Health: 1/2 credit required

Speech: 1/2 credit required
Integrated into the 10th grade DATA classes
Fine Arts: 1 credit required
Obtained in Electronic Media II during freshman year
Technology Applications: 1 credit required
Many of the DATA electives fit this requirement
Internship: A requirement for all DATA students a DATA Internship may begin during the junior year but must be completed before the beginning of the senior year.
Community Service: In order to be a DATA graduate students must complete 120 hours of documented community service.
Guided Research Project: During senior year DATA students must create a comprehensive guided research project.

A DATA Student Should Be Able to...

      • Determine ethical issues surrounding computer use
      • Select appropriate software, hardware and/or programming languages to communicate
      • Integrate software based on desired needs
      • Rapidly learn new software by understanding common tasks and concepts within software packages
5. Organize oneself and use time management practices
6. Assume responsibility and accountability for oneself
7. Utilize one’s personal learning style and maximize its use
8. Enter a university or college system
      • Complete PSAT/SAT prep work
      • Take PSAT/SATs/ACTs
      • Understand college admittance system
      • Determine goals for education and work life
9. Communicate effectively in verbal, written, graphic and three-dimensional forms
10. Work in group/team as a member and as a leader
11. Demonstrate the principles of group participation and leadership related to citizenship and career preparation 
12. Draw from design and technology experiences in high school to enrich and enhance future experiences
13. Use the employability characteristics of a successful worker to obtain and keep a job
14. Translate critical thinking skills to all aspects of life, not limited only to design and technology fields

Interesting Facts

DATA is the second oldest magnet program in NEISD.

The 90 members of the class of 2008 were awarded over $4,250,000 in scholarships.

11% of DATA students come from other school districts outside of NEISD.

To apply to DATA, send in your application by February 4, 2009.

Attend the parent/student information meeting on January 29, 2009 @ 7:00 p.m in the Roosevelt auditorium.
