Constitution Day
Celebrated September 17
"A primary object…should be the education of our
youth in the science of government. In a republic, what species of knowledge can
be equally important? And what duty more pressing…than…communicating it to those
who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?"
-George Washington
On Sept. 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by thirty-nine brave men who changed the course of history. Now Constitution Day is a time for us to continue their legacy and develop habits of citizenship in a new generation of Americans. The U.S. Department of Education announced on May 24, 2005, that all local education agencies (LEAs) receiving federal funds, including NCLB and IDEA, must teach about the U.S. Constitution on September 17 of each year.
